The Selection Tool (a.k.a Rectangular selection tool, a.k.a Geometric Selection tool) has the same icon it has always had. A rectangle with the dotted line marching ants marquee around it.

Hmmm... that is what I thought, and I just turned on the computer on which I have X3 to confirm it has the same icon and cursor as in X4. That was why, in my first post above, I wondered whether Lisa had let her finger slip down the little menu which comes out of the selection tool and had selected for example the freehand selection tool... In my case, though, the icon is a dotted square, and thecursor is a double cross-hair like a + sign, with the dotted square down in its bottom right quadrant. When applied, you have the marching dots in square or rectangular appearance.

Hello All,

I have already tried and tested the RESET TO DEFAULT option of the SELECTION TOOL and it appears that Levi is correct. I already reported this to the correct channel and I will update this post once I received a response.

btw for those looking for the RESET TO DEFAULT option here a screen shot of the button.

To be fair, nhlisa brought this to the front. So nhlisa is correct I just verified first.

But I remain mystified as to what Lisa is actually seeing on her screen that she wants to reset...

Shape, default interaction mode (replace, add, subtract), anti-alias, feather setting.

True these are "Rectangle" "Replace" "0" No anti-aliasing. But the fact that it should be resetting is the important part. Not whether or not these values are difficult to reset manually.

Hi to all

I myself solved the problem by typing and disabling what I want to have or don't want to have, saved it and when I used the next time, it worked again or simple reset of the entire PSPX4. Hold the Shift-key down while launching PSP and confirm that you want to overwrite the workspace.

I'm going to look into this issue and to escalate it.

Thanks for letting us know!

Ken,

Nothing mystifing at all....I click on reset and nothing happens. If you see the screen shot that was previously posted that's what I see.

Normally when you reset a tool, that little menu goes away and the tool is reset. Well when I cilck to reset, nothing happens. The box stays on the screen.

Thanks Lisa. I confess i have never used the reset button in the past -- never felt I had to, and apart from it not working in X4, probably wouldn't use it anyway. I guess I got used to a different workflow in Photoshop which is what I have mostly used till now. And though it too probably has a reset button hidden somewhere, I just got used to using Edit > Undo Selection. I realise that does not reset the Selection Mode, Type, Feather or Anti-Alias settings, but I guess I just got used to adjusting things back manually. A bit klutzy though, now that I think of it  !!

I've been learning Photoshop myself and yes you can reset the tools but I can never remember where it is. I have to search for it every time. Then again I don't get enough time to play with Photoshop. Since I'm head moderatory for a group that does PSP tutorials and challenges, and since I'm still diong PSP lessons to continue learning, that's more of my priority. I am however trying to make more time to learn more in Photoshop. I did take lessons in a Yahoo Group called Learning Photoshop for All. It was a good group but I feel that there should have been more lessons.

Yes -- I probably use less than 10% of Photoshop's capacity, but have learned to live with it. I used to use PSP back in the JASC days, but gave it up when I got an earlier version of Photoshop. I then bought PSP X3 but confess I gave up trying to use that when it displayed the many problems it has. Now I am trying to make a more serious effort with X4 which I obtained sort of by accident. I was more interested in Video Studio X4 Ultimate, but when I saw Corel had a good offer of VS and PSP X4 Ultimate in the same box, I jumped at it.

I started with PSP first just about 2 years ago. I found a Yahoo Group called Stepping Stones through PSP which was great and helped me learn a lot! After finishing the steps, I did their filter lesson group, their Incredimail stationery group and most of their amation group. I then found Winni's groups. She had groups for all kinds of things. I have taken her blending lessons, designer lessons, filter lessons, frame lessons, mask lessons, pixel lessons, scrappbooking lessons, Incredimail stationery lessosn, wallpaper lessons....I'm current taking her PSP lessons. At first I thought it was another group where you learned the tools and went from there...I didn't want to do another group like that. But this isn't like that. It's just a variety of things and I'm enjoying it. Was in her testing group for a while and tested the new PowerPoint lessons, so I got a certificate for that group too. There have been other lesson groups that I've done as well. So i'm very comfortable with PSP. I know the tools that I don't like and I try to avoid them. LOL!

I wish I could find more lesson groups for Photoshop. But the only one I found in Yahoo groups was the one I did. They setup an "after the group" group...but they only do one lesson a month. I did just find another group that's similiar in concept but no official lessons. So much to learn and so little time. I do tend to learn better if I'm in a group where I have to do the lessons.

Don't you love when those good deals come up....I try to take advantage of things like that when I can.
