Interlacing Artifact Problem...I think!
I'm new to VS 4...have not bought it yet, using the demo download. I'm transferring old home movies to DVD by capturing projector output with a dig. camcorder going directly into a dvd recorder via s video cable.
My resulting dvds have vob files. It appears VS 4 does not import vobs so I convert them with Any Video Converter to .mpg mpeg-II movies and import into VS 4. When I produce a dvd, the film has a lot of zigzags, especially on high contrast edges with quick movement. I also used the same vobs, imported directly into AVS Video Editor and did not have the interlacing problem at all.
I like the Corel program better and wish to buy it IF I can solve this problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated...Should I convert to something other than .mpg? I'm hoping to retain as much of the original quality as possible...file size is of no importance.

Hi
And welcome to the forums.
Sounds like an interlacing problem………..to many conversions??
Can we assume that the DVD recorder quality is ok.
Place the disc in your PC’s DVD/CD drive.
Right click timeline and select Insert Digital Media.
Navigate the following window to find the VIDEO_TS Folder
Select the titles you wish to import.
The files will be saved to the Working Folder, thumbnails placed in timeline.
Another option……..
Copy the Vob files to your hard drive
Rename the Vob files to use the extension Mpg instead of Vob.
Import the Mpg files to Video Studio, Right click the timeline and select Insert Video
With the clips in the timeline, right click and select properties, what are they?

What is the make and model of your camcorder? I ask since there may be a better quality way of capturing from it than using an S-Video cable.

Ah... so it is an analogue camcorder. In that case, I am afraid the S-Video cable is about as good as you can use.

Hi
Can you confirm that the properties you provided are from the video file imported to Video Studio directly from the disc. And not converted using Any Video Converter
-------------------------
Your video is using 4:3 ratio, VS defaults to 16:9 to change this.
Go to Settings Preferences-Show Messages when inserting First Video………….
Start a new project—add one of your video files, a window will show, if you wish view the details then choose yes/ok
Your project properties should change th match the video file.
For existing projects go to Settings Project properties and set them as your video properties.
Ok
Continue to edit your project
Then Share Create Video File same as Project or First clip
This will create a new vide file of the project, suitable to use in burning a DVD.
By the way how long is the final edited project, this may affect the Bit rate in order to create a file under 4.3 GB.

BTW, it was suggested that I convert the VOBs using VOB2MPG. You recommended just changing the ext. If I used the program to convert the files, does the quality degrade? Just changing the ext is faster and easier...any disadvantages? Thanks for your help.

Hi
When you import a DVD you are importing the VOB files. These for intents and purposes are Mpeg2 files.
Using Video Studio (Import Digital Media) to import the VIDEO_TS folder will transfer the files as is.
You are not using the program to convert the files, rather transfer them, what you have on the disc is what you get in VS. No changes.
The option to re-name the file extension from Vob to Mpg does work for most files, I have to say that some still do not import. You seem to have been successful.
Your files are using the same properties as on the disc.
Once you have the files on your computer use one of your media players to check the quality.
Is the quality acceptable.
Now edit using Video Studio.
---------------------------------------
Note:-
The bit rate of 9334 kbps is a little higher than Video Studio uses as its default maximum. (8264kbps)
However when you “Share Create Video File Same as first clip” your properties should be used.
You then use the resultant file to burn a dvd.
How
Start a new project
Share Create Disc -- DVD
From the burner module Add the Video file.

Re: Interlacing Artifact Problem...I think!
The only drawback is where the vob is made up of multiple mpegs.
A VOB is just a wrapper designed for dvd players to read. Inside the VOB might be one mpeg file, it could be half of a 2gb mpeg file, (VOBs can only be 1gb max) or it could be 10 x 100mb mpeg files.
In the later case, renaming vob to mpeg often results in only mpeg 1 of your 10 being available to use.

... and if you are (gasp!) ripping from a commercial DVD, you might find that if it has multiple language tracks, you can get the video but it has a single audio track which is not the language you are after!! (Believe me, I've been in that situation...!)
