Upgrading to PI 10 on a new machine

Post by cloun »

Hiyez...

A stupid question I think I already know the answer to, but...

I'm a registered owner of PI 5, but it is installed on my old machine. Can I install PI 10 on my new machine without having to dig up my PI 5 disc (which has flat out disappeared in the black hole that is my office) and installing it in my new XP (sp 2) machine?

Thanky!

Well, you can install the program on as many computers as you like, but you do need to find that disc before you can install it though

Let me clarify:

PI 5, though I am a registered owner, is not presently installed on my new machine.

I have not purchased PI 10 yet. If I cannot find my PI 5 disc, and it's installation in my new machine is required in order to upgrade, I will have to order the Full version of PI 10 instead of the Upgrade...

Or will I?

If you want to install an Upgrade to another computer, that does not have a previous working Version installed, you must provide an Install disc as proof of purchase during installation.

Which means yes you qualify for the Upgrade, but no you can not install on another computer; as long as you do not have the old program installed or can not furnish the old install disc as proof of purchase.

Here is how that works. When you try to install the Upgrade it will search the Drive for a valid installed working program, if it does not find one it will ask you for a Valid Media Check, or the old install disc as proof of ownership before it will install.

If you were networking you could get the Upgrade, but under your present circumstances you would have to purchase the Full version. Since you are a registered user of a previous version you would qualify for a replacement disc as long as you could provide valid proof of ownership.

The problem is that you might find it very difficult to get a replacement disc for Version 5, as I doubt Ulead still has any in stock and I believe there is a length of time after your purchase before your eligibility runs out for a replacement disc; also they no longer have Version 6. You can always try Ulead, because I would not suggest using someone else’s disc!

Many thanks!

That's what I assumed. Guess I'll turn this house upside down trying to find that disc...

Well, I think there is another way. Does your installation on your old machine have the PI 5 setup.exe file stored? I never buy boxed versions and use downloaded software from ULEAD. After a recent rebuilt of my PC, when asked for proof of eligibility for the upgrade, I pointed PI to the drive containing my download backup. It worked. You could give that a try but, I guess, in order to try it you need to buy it. Not much use if it doesn't work. Maybe someone else can confirm my finding.

Brilliant Heinz, you are on to something.

If you copy the Old Ulead Folder and contents onto CD and then copy it to your new computer, in the same location it was previously installed, the Upgrade should confirm you previous ownership, Maybe! it might find the Ulead Setup file and install. Of course if it doesn’t you’re stuck with the Upgrade.

What about EBay? Maybe you could find a really cheap version for sale.
