“Unable to open file. File format mismatch”.
I have searched the Knowledge base and come up blank (again) so I would like to apologise, in advance, if I have missed the obvious.
In VideoStudio X4 (SP1), I am trying to import an edited (VSX4) project into the library in order to use parts of it in a different project. This is something I have done successfully before but the last couple of times I have tried I get the message:
“Unable to open file. File format mismatch”. (1081:1:3)
There is no problem opening up the project in the normal way it is only when I try and import it into the library.
I have compared the properties of these files with the successfully imported files and, to me, they look identical. They were all captured from video in the same way, so I’m wondering if anyone has any ideas what could be wrong.
Robert

Hi Robert
By adding a Project file (VSP) to the timeline you are using a process called nesting.
As far as I know you cannot add a nested VSP to the library.
Standard project files can be added to the library.

Hi Trevor,
I can't understand that because, as I said, I've done it before.
Guess it must've been a fluke!
Thanks anyway

Trevor -- I thought that too. But if you use 'Insert Media Files' in the library pane, one of the allowed formats is .vsp! And I just tested it, and it works!!
In fact, making a new folder for it, it is one way of having all your instant project templates available within VS...

Hi Ken
This is what i did........
1 / Open a new project
2 / Add a few images and save as “Project one”
3 / Open a new project add “Project one” (nesting) to the timeline, save as “Project two”.
4 / Start a new project just to clear the timeline.
5 / When I try to Insert “Project Two” to library I get a warning as a mismatch.
I am however able to insert Project One
I am unable to insert a project to the library that contains a nested project.

Re: “Unable to open file. File format mismatch”.
Well, that is probably it. I personally never nest projects, so the projects I inserted to the timeline were not nested ones.
Wonder if FreoFan was using nested ones this time...?

Re: “Unable to open file. File format mismatch”.
Thanks for your continued interest in my query.
I am having trouble figuring out what "nesting" actually means.
I am using the "insert media files" to get the files into the library so that I can use parts of them in a different project.
The file that I was able to import was one in which I had added video, transitions and music, I was hoping that, once in the library, it would be a case of clicking split by scene so I could then get access to the individual scenes but, unfortunately, that wasn't the case.
The files that could not be imported only had video but were otherwise identical to the successfully imported file, so I can't see how one can be nested and the other not.

Re: “Unable to open file. File format mismatch”.
Nesting is where you have one project open in the timeline. Then you insert into the timeline another vsp project file, and save the whole thing as a new project file or part of the first project file. In other words, with one project nesting in another. But by the sounds of it, you are not doing that. But I remain at a loss to understand why you can insert certain vsp files into the library but not others if none of them are nested.

If I am reading that correctly then you are trying to import a VSP into the library.
If you do not understand the concept of Nesting then you could have by mistake inserted a VSP inside another VSP.
When you insert to the library a “browse” window opens, change the view of this window to Details
( for Vista I believe its under the View option)
The Type column will show a VSP as a Corel Video Studio Document

Re: “Unable to open file. File format mismatch”.
Thanks for the explanation guys.
I think I understand "nesting" now and, as you said, I have probably done it without realising so will be more careful in future.
regards
Robert
