Have you looked at this tutorial on how to use the PnP filter: http://www.vimeo.com/8978357 It was made for X3 but will work also for X4 since it is the same filter. The important thing is that you have to first apply a mask.

I disagree. That effect is quite possible using the New Blue FX, PiP. I was able to recreate that effect quickly. Spending more time with it and you'll learn just how powerful it is. This is a short example that took me less than 5 minutes to create. It's not perfect, but I wasn't aiming for perfection to just demonstrate that the effect you're referring to can be done quite easily in VS.

To do this you need to start on the first keyframe of the PiP, with Reset to none. Move to a position just before you want the full screen size to start resizing, and copy that first keyframe or, just select reset to none again. Next move to where you want the split-screen/side-by-side, now resize the clip, making adjustments to the size and position.

Don't rely just on the templates provided with the effect. Those are just examples to use, to get you started. Did you know that you can save your customized settings?

First understand that a preset does not contain all the keyframes in the timeline. It is the settings for one keyframe. So to save an entire effect you must save each keyframe separately.

Across the top you will see 3 buttons one being a P, which stands for Presets.

Click on that button to open a menu,

nbfx_presets-02.png (49.7 KiB) Viewed 3135 times
which will show all the presets for the PiP effect. These are the same as all the thumbnails. Notice at the bottom to options, Open Preset and Save Preset as. To save your preset settings for a keyframe, select the Save Preset as, a dialog window will open
nbfx_presets-03.png
provide a name and location on your computer to save it.

Once this is done, you can simply open your preset to add it. I find this makes it much easier to add those keyframes when you want an effect to remain static for a period of time, instead of even copy/pasting. Plus it will be there to add to additional clips. ;)

The best thing is to export the effect as atemplate, and open it from the instant project.
