At the moment, the only file format that I can import on the edit tab is *.wmv. There should be no issue importing *.avi or *.mp4 or any other format for that matter, but it fails to open the files. I keep getting the same "unable to open the file 17101:7:1" error for seemingly no reason. Everyone says this software's functionality is wonderful, but if it won't even let you bring in normal files it's looking less and less useful all the time. Any direction toward a solution would be helpful.
Thanks.

Welcome to the forums!
When you say 'importing' those formats, what exactly do you mean? What steps are you taking to open the clips in VS?

Re: Videostudio X2 "unable to open the file"
Hi Ken-
So the types of files I'm trying to open are primarily unaltered *.avi recorded on a Sony Cybershot camera. However, I've noticed this problem with other file types as I mentioned earlier. So when I launch VS X2 it goes to the edit screen. Using the "Load Video" icon on the right side, I browse to the *.avi file I want to import and though it can see the files, it is not able to open them so they never added to the thumbnail list.

Re: Videostudio X2 "unable to open the file"
There are at least 800 different flavors if you will of *.avi. AVI is a container or wrapper so just claiming that the program will not import what you imply to be normal "avi" is not true. VS X2 has no problems with most "AVI" codecs:So the types of files I'm trying to open are primarily unaltered *.avi recorded on a Sony Cybershot camera.
A few codecs found in the *.avi wrapper
Now the Sony Cybershot records video using AVCHD and MPEG-4. To further complicate things for older versions of VS, it records the Hi-Def at 60fps. The most current of VS still can not handle 60fps video correctly. What Sony chooses to wrap their codecs in may cause problems for various video editing programs. Moreover, if you're using a newer camera, then expecting an older version to be able to instantly recognize and use the recording codec is not realistic. These are constantly changing. Companies like Sony, will use proprietary formats, and not share their "secrets", so other NLE makers do not know how to properly adapt their products. Sony has it's own line of NLEs, thus they are competing with Corel, and more than likely not want Corel's products to work with their products.
Corel VS, uses the M2T, MPEG wrapper for AVCHD, where apparently Sony puts theirs in an AVI, or MPEG-4.

Re: Videostudio X2 "unable to open the file"
Thank you for the descriptions Ron. So if AVI isn't just a one size fits all approach, then is my only option to convert the AVI to WMV which seems to work now when I load the videos into VS? Are there other formats or settings that I should be aware of during the conversion process that I can easily import into VS?

Re: Videostudio X2 "unable to open the file"
Sure there are, what format you should use depends on what your planning on the end result to be used for. Are you wanting to burn a disc, if so, DVD (which is standard-def), Blue-Ray or AVCHD, which both are forms of Hi-def.

Re: Videostudio X2 "unable to open the file"
My two options for finalization are primarily family movies to post on facebook or even burn to a DVD. No hi-def production values needed.
Right now I've been using SoundTaxi Pro+ VideoRip v. 4.2.5 for all my conversions of both straight audio and video files with no apparent issues thus far. So when I grab the AVI I have the options as follows:
IPOD 320x240, 480x320, 640x480, original picture size, h264
DIVX 320x240, 640x480, original picture size
WMV 320x240
PC WMV original picture size
AAC- MPEG4 audio
MP3- MPEG layer3 audio
That's all the descriptions they provide me. The PC WMV option is the only one that has worked thus far in converting the AVI to a format that VideoStudio can identify and open.
