Need Help gettins smooth slo mo in Pro X3
Hey there guys
I edit gaming videos, call of duty etc but when I slow down the video it gets very choppy and I was wondering if anyone knows of a way around this or if there are any programs you can buy or download that can smooth out the slow motion.
I don't understand why it is doing it tbh because the clips are recorded at 60 fps
If anyone has any info that could help me it would be much appreciated
I was hoping to get my video finished by the weekend but not at this rate

Re: Need Help gettins smooth slo mo in Pro X3
I can't help on the slow motion side. I don't think X3 is capable of true slow motion but others may be able to help there.
But in any case, I think your problem has more to do with the fact that X3 (and X4) cannot handle 60 fps video correctly. (I am assuming here it is AVCHD high def mpeg-4 format.) I don't know either what you are trying to produce... e.g. downgrading to a standard def DVD or producing a Blu-Ray disc or something else. But VS as I say cannot use 60 fps. It will eventually, if you retain AVCHD or even convert to Blu-Ray mpeg-2 or SD mpeg-2, drop it from that progressive frame rate to interleaved 29.97 fps. And to do so, essentially it will drop a full frame a second. That may even appear a little jerky at full speed. But if you are also slowing things down, the jerkiness would become even more pronounced.
Unfortunately, I cannot even recommend another software package which can output true 60 fps in AVCHD or Blu-Ray -- though I think you could check both Sony Movie Studio HD Platinum (or the full Sony Vegas) and possibly also Magix 17...
WE have been pressing Corel for some time to issue a patch to adapt X4 to 50/60p video, but so far they have not complied.

Just adding to Ken's suggestion... if you want to try and see how VS X4 handles the videos that you are working on, you can download the trial of VS X4 at http://www.corel.com/trials

Re: Need Help gettins smooth slo mo in Pro X3
I Have been playing with slow motion lately. VS X4 does handle slow motion, if one handles the entire process correctly. First settle on what you want to create: is it 24p, 30p, 60i, etc. Then the source needs to have enough fps so that when inserted into the time line it will have the appropriate slow motion. The source needs to have been recorded at an appropriate shutter speed, otherwise slow motion will not look smooth.
The easiest to use program to prepare recorded video for slow motion is Twixtor, but it costs money. I use a cocktail of virtualdub, avisynth, and mvtools to prepare video for slow motion which are all free but take time to learn to use. Basically the idea of these methods is to smoothly interpolate frames in between the captured frames to change 24fps into 48, 72, 96, etc, and then play the video as if it were 24fps for suitable slow motion. For sure unless the original video has sufficient smooth capture to begin with, this method will not produce smooth slow motion for all cases.
The lesson is that creating smooth slow motion requires a lot of work, and learning, which I am still doing. Here is the link to an example slow motion using the free cocktail I mentioned: http://vimeo.com/25648604
EDIT: I tried to embed the vimeo sample, but I don't know how to do it.

Thanks Al for the useful explanation. Do you think the same thing would apply to X3, which is what the original question was about?

I forget whether X3 had some limitations about this. For sure using Twixtor or my cocktail method will create a slowmo video clip that I think will insert into X3 and show slowmo... Re: Need Help gettins smooth slo mo in Pro X3
FWIW, I've tried fixing the vimeo embed code. There's something really messed up with it. It works when you press the Preview button for your post, however when you submit it, the forum refuses to display/embed it. I'll try looking further later on.
EDITED
I finally managed to get the vimeo embed code to work. Instead of using the entire url of your video, just enter the video number.

The reason is that Videostudio does not support 60fps by default. But luckily there is way around it, though it is a messy workaround.SWATLEADER wrote:call of duty etc but when I slow down the video it gets very choppy...

Checkout this post http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php ... 30#p216639 by mcspeedy380, and follow the steps closely.
Use that template for your video, and you can then slow it to 50% to get smooth 30fps playback.
And this works for me in X3. So in effect, disappointingly, they have not done any improvement in X4 for 60fps support; and this is the reason that I did not bother to upgrade.

Yes I have googled "Twixtor" befor and was unable to find a plug in for VS Pro X4.
The link you attached, I checked the compatibility tab and doesnt show VS Pro X4.
Please feel free to point out the obvious if I am not looking at what I should be.

Re: Need Help gettins smooth slo mo in Pro X3
I am pretty sure that Al was talking about using Twixtor as a stand-alone program, and not as a plug-in for X3 or X4. AFAIK there is no such plug-in for VS.

Re: Need Help gettins smooth slo mo in Pro X3
That is the correct link to this program Twixtor, which is reputed to be the best at creating the most fluid slow motion. It runs independent of VS, and costs a lot of money, but worth it if you are into doing slowmo a lot. For grandfather me doing family videos the free cocktail I use is good enough... Ok, is it stand alone for VS prox4? If so, I had a look at downloading the trial version from http://www.revisionfx.com/products/twixtor/downloads/
and after you click download it says to select your platform to view downloads which should I use?

I don't know. Why don't you ask the Twixtor authors?Mrflooglebinder wrote:Ok, is it stand alone for VS prox4? If so, I had a look at downloading the trial version from http://www.revisionfx.com/products/twixtor/downloads/
