X4 takes 5 minutes to boot up.

X4 works fine for me on my 2yr old Vista 64bit quad machine with 8gigs except that it takes almost 5 minutes to boot up so I can use it. Any ideas?

The application boots up to the edit screen than I just get the busy signal for the next 4-5 minutes. Task manager shows it is not responding. Works fine after that.

I also have X2 and it works just fine. If I make any changes to the uncataloged folders or file format exclusions under preferences in X4 it does the same thing (5 minites wait) untill the changes have taken affect. With that in mind I believe its a cataloging issue. Once its up and running its no problem. This is a trial if that makes any difference.I have tried the reset while booting it up ( hold down the crtl & alt keys) and that causes the program to crash after I select okay from the reset menu. The program is reset though after reloading it.

I don't use a graphic card and can not get GL 3.0 support or higher if that maked any difference like it does with Corel DVD movie factory which won't work on my computer.

mine sometimes takes longer than it shold. i think it's something to do with the licensing checks.

I have exactly the same problem. I have occasionally had it load quickly but then it reverts to 5-10 minute start-up. I have tried resetting and re-installing to no avail. I'm pretty sure it is a catalogue issue. If it opens on the Manage screen you can see the scroll bar on the collections window change shape and move up and down before the window is populated with the folders. This takes several minutes.

There are many reasons why this happens. Mine just starts in less than 20 seconds... if it is taking you longer than it should... you can reset your workspace.

You can do that by pressing and holding down the SHIFT key then double-click on the PSP icon then when you received the message "DO YOU WAN TO RESTORE PAINTSHOP Pro TO ITS DEFAULT STATE?" just click OK.


If that did not work, you can RESTORE DATABASE by clicking on START > ALL PROGRAMS > PAINTSHOP PRO X4 > RESTORE DATABASE. Of course all the steps that I mentioned will remove any customization that you setup.

Thanks for the advice. I have tried the recommendations above and it still takes 5 minutes before I can use it.

After trying all the recommendations and having no luck I purchased the ultimater version and re-downloaded it after uninstalling. Now after I added a bunch of folders to the uncataloged list X4 boots up and is running in about 7 seconds. I also boot up to the edit screen and have the organizer turned off in all three tabs.

One thing also, the download from the email link for the paid version of Ultimate installed differently as far as prompts go asking me for info that the reg version did not. What ever the case X4 boot up fast now. Thanks for the help.

I still can't get my trial version to load quickly - I've reset the program and the database several times with no effect. I do have a lot of images on my hard disk so I suspected the database but Ronj2's experience suggests it might be to do with the licencing. I'm reluctant to buy the full version when the loading on the trial is so slow. I have X3 loading fine on my machine so I guess I will have to stick with that.

All versions of PSP since version 11 have in common that the organizer is checking all folders in My Documents. It can take ages to get it to start the first time because it begins to catalogue immediately. 10.000 images take about 1.5 hours ???

I would suggest, you install PSPX4, allow the program to initialize, then launch it. Give it all the time it needs.

If it works, go to File - Preferences - Manage and exclude for example all folders containing your documents.

This will have no impact on using the Organizer.

Please keep in mind that each reset of workspace/database of course forces PSP again to catalogue all folders in My Documents ...

I personally have no docs in My Documents and X4 launches very fast in Edit mode in few seconds.

"Uncataloged Folders" or "Excluded Folders" as it used to be called are described in the Help System as:

"Specify folders to exclude from cataloging"

If you click on such a folder in Manage Mode, no Images appear
BUT
if you click on it again, all the contents is neatly cataloged for you

I have resorted to keeping all my images out of "My Pictures" and sub-folders
and I have 'Excluded' most other folders apart from my genuine photo folders.

Thank you Simone, that seemed to work. I excluded My Documents folder and now PSP loads quickly even thouygh there were no picture files in My Documents.

I have the same issue. I've followed all of the ideas here and still end up watching it spin. The insulting thing is how quick the ad for something else Corel related pops up. I've been using PSP since the JASC days prob version 3. If this is what it has become, I've bought my last version.

I have a 64bit i3 ASUS laptop that I use while traveling. (Which I'm doing at the moment). 4 gig of ram. It takes 5-6 seconds to start up PSPx4.

So it's not PSPx4 as such but more than likely your settings in preferences.

It would be a good idea if someone had the time to put their preference settings on a post somewhere so that those who are having issues could copy them as a starting point. I'll see if I can get the time but I'll be pushing.

By the way I have no photos in the 'My Documents' folder. As Simon points out that maybe an issue. All my photos are in the 'My Pictures' folder.

The latest update fixed the 5 minute start up for me. Now I am using X5 and have 2 minute start ups.
