how to sort photos in organizer

Post by pparent »

I'm new to psp x4, should I say back after more than 10 years?!!

All my pictures are in folders by date, not by events...! How can I create virtual folders (like albums in PSP) to group photos from same occasion but from different folders?

You don't create folders in PSP, they are on your hard drive.

When you open PSPX4, look in the Navigation panel and you can find your folders listed. Open one that contains images and those images will be shown in the Organiser.

Open PSPX4 in Manage workspace, select a folder with images. Click on the small icon on the top right and all images will be shown in the workspace. To view full screen, double click on an image. You can also click through the arrow, left/right to scroll through your images.

"Virtual folders" TrueBlue, not actual folders.

In the Organizer you call them "Collections" however, collections require a filter and only grab photos that fit into those groups. So it takes a little bit of setup.

First let's go over what you have. In PSP you have the following organizational units: Smart Collections, Hard Drive Folders, Tags, and Ratings.

Tags and Ratings allow you to quickly select a specific tag or rating and see all of the photos that you have set-up with those particular settings.

Smart Collections build off of those by allowing you to filter based on very specific criteria. You can include, or exclude, certain features and aren't limited to tags and ratings.

Harddrive foldres are exactly as they sound. Actual folders on your harddrive. If you move photos into them you actually move photos from one folder to another as a way of organizing your harddrive. But you stressed "albums" or "virtual folders" so the prior three are what you're looking for.

First tag all of your photos with the event name (make sure they all match) then you can tag by any additional information if you so choose. Also giving them a rating is never a bad idea in case you want a collection of all of your best photos from a particular event.

Once they are all marked, and in X4 you can do this in Manage, Adjust, or Edit mode, make sure the Organizer is open. (View menu -> Palettes -> Organizer)

If the tree view with all of your photos and collections don't appear then go down to your organizer and press the button that looks like two folders connected by a bracket. This will pop-up the Navigation view that has two tabs "Collections" and "Computer." Collections deals with actual folders and collections. Computer just deals with searching your whole harddrive. Make sure you have "Collections" selected. You'll know it because "Smart Collections" will be at the top of the view.

Click the "Add Smart Collection" button and it'll ask you for a filter. Filter by the tag, make sure it says "Contains" and then type in the exact name of the tag you want to filter by.

You will also notice that there are two button in the upper right-hand corner that look like "+" and "-" signs. These allow you to add more filters for more control over the collections.

Those should provide you with what you need. Have fun. :D
