X4 and realvideo

Post by UptownCheese »

The box states as an option for input and output. That means to me rm or ram. I can find no way to import those files. I think I read plugin needed but can't find that blurb now. What do I need to do so the software will do what is billed. Thanks.

I did several searches on this board and my question was not answered.

Do you have Real player installed on your computer (Control Panel > Programs and Features)? The installation packed for VS includes it but you have to install it by choice, I think, but it will give VS the necessary codec.

No Ken I don't have it installed. If there is a discrete file on the install DVD that is locatable via search I can't find it. Will installing Realplayer defintely fix the problem?
Thanks for the reply

I can't say that installing Real Player will fix it. I have Real Player installed, and find that those formats are not listed in VS.

I'm not sure why VS X4 will not recognize RM videos. I done some checking and VS X2 seems to be the last version that did include a version of Real Player. The installer is found in one of the Utility folders on the installation disc. VS X4 does not have a Real Player utility. I've checked both the vanilla version and Ultimate.

  I'm sorry -- I should have looked before I leapt!! I just assumed it was in the install package since I recalled it had been in the past, and I had never seen anything to say Corel had dropped it. But for me, Real is one of those formats and software packages that I have never liked -- mainly because in the past it was so invasive. Nowadays I tolerate it because of its association with VS and because users might ask questions about it. But I did a good job of it here, didn't I?

Ron is of course correct. But the curious thing is that while there is nothing on the installation DVD, I have checked the x4 box it came in, and Real video is listed as being both an acceptable input and output format. Unfortunately, I don't have any .rm files to see if in fact X4 (or X3) would accept them. And about the only way I can think of to output a file in that format would be Share > Create Video File > Same as first clip (assuming you had an .rm file as first clip). I guess you could also try making a template for it using the Make Movie Template Manager > Add function and pointing it an .rm file with the properties you wanted. But again, I cannot test this as I have no .rm files!

FWIW, I just downloaded a sample .rm file from the internet. X4 cannot see it when using Insert > All Formats. And when I tried All Files and pointed at the .rm file, it returned a 'File Format Mismatch' error. So I guess that answers that!

Interestingly, X2 could see the file first off, but when I tried to insert it in the timeline, it returned a 'Contents are unreadable' response. It plays just fine in the latest version (14.0) of Real Player, unsurprisingly...

Thank You Ken for your very thorough investigation. I'm glad I joined and posted. I like Corel products ( I also have Photoimpact X3) because I can understand how they work.

I use a Sourceforge product to convert my rm files to divx and/or xvid. If the link is disallowed by all means delete it.

Sourceforge is fine... But I would have thought it would convert to XVid (being another Sourceforge product) as opposed to the commercial DivX!!

By the way, I converted another file to .rv format (as opposed to .rm) and got the same responses in the different versions of VS.

My mistake. It does both. Thanks
