Can't Delete Video Files After Editing

Post by twelvexes »

probably isn't an X4 issue exactly, but i was hoping someone might be able to assist.

when i'm done editing a video file in X4, i'll close the file and insert the next video file to edit. when i go into windows explorer to delete the first file i just finished editing, it won't let me delete it because it says it's currently in use. does anyone know if there is something i can do that will allow me to delete it without having to close down X4 to do so?

Why on earth would you want to delete a file if you have just edited it?? Have you created a new file from it first? And I am not just talking about going to File > Save or Save As. That only creates a VSP project file which is a text file, not a video file. You have to first create a new file: Share > Create Video File.

This is exactly the same in all programmes, be it word, publisher, photoshop or VS, if the file is in use, it cannot be deleted.

If you delete it while you are trying to use it in VS it'll be gone, so will your video you are making.

If you need to create space, then do your editing, save out the new movie file, close down VS and delete your file.

what's kinda weird is that it does sometimes let me delete the file, but most of the time not. i tried to figure out if there was a certain sequence i did things in which allowed me to delete the file, but couldn't come up with anything definitive.

Hi

I have just tried and do not have a problem deleting files Mpeg/Avi using Windows Explorer, even though the files are in use. I do however receive a Re-Link which is to be expected.

Are you also trying to delete the Project File VSP, That option will not be allowed if it is in use, or has been used in the current session.

But that is still what we need to know: how exactly did you 'create and save' -- using Share > Create Video File> ? Or File > Save/Save As?

Is the video file you're trying to delete still on the timeline in VS? If so that would explain the error message of the file being in use. You need to clear the timeline first. This can be done simply by select File>New Project.

Hi

I can delete video files Mpegs ,Avi’s, Wav audio etc even though they are in the timeline or in the library.

Video Studio just generates a Re-Link , the clip turns black and white as expected.

The only files I cannot remove/delete are VSP’s but only when they are being used, the project is open.

I clear the timeline of the original video file via File>New Project and even insert a new video file before I try to delete the original file from Windows Explorer.
