capture-error out of memory for wave buffer

Post by viv »

Videostudio 8 + latest update – analogue capture fails with error message -
Out of memory for wave buffers
Motherboard k7S741mg-6L
Athlon 3000
1024 DDR memory
Hauppauge Win TV capture card
OS Win ME

Failure occurs with MPEG or AVI capture so settings seem immaterial

Before upgrade from K7S5A +1ghz Duron +512 DDR memory could capture to MPEG & AVI although not consistently or quickly which was reason for upgrade- since upgrade strange chroma around some objects so suspect drivers/programs conflicts but can’t resolve.

As an aside, can never get capture to lock on to DVD -only choices are AVI or MPEG
Have tried ‘end it all’
Reinstallation of Videostudio-deleted all registry entries etc
Increased wave setting from 4 to 9 (even tried increasing to 20 via registry)
Searched forum
All to no avail

Other relevant programs might be Virtual Dub, Pinnacle CD/DVD

Grateful for any suggestions to solve problem other than PC too slow and capture card not up to it - although that is under consideration-
Bios? Realtek-applied to earlier board

You may want to try removing 512MB from your system. Windows 98/SE/ME are kinda stoopid when it comes to memory management, and having more than 512MB of RAM can be detrimental:

Thank you very much - Your counterintuitive advice solved the problem. Is it better to remove 512 memory or use maxcache - as both seem to work. I have posted a new query as I can,t get>4GB files as DSW plugin produces a black screen with Win TV card and starting MPEG capture gives an A or B message

Capture attempted from full size(interlaced) overlay mode or quartsight capture mode failed to capture- switch to preview mode

Memoryallocation failed restart application

Switching to AVI and back to MPEG does solve it sometimes.

Windows ME and the FAT32 file system don't support files > 4GB, there is no way around that.

I would strongly suggest upgrading to Windows XP. Not only will that free you from that limitation, it will also let you put the 512MB of RAM back into your system and to good use.

Virtual Dub will chain 4 GB files and I upgraded from VS4SE to VS8 as it claimed to do the same. I am an XP refusnic- I think I would rather go linux. So I need the DSW plugin to work

VirtualDub supports file chaining, and so does UVS for DV AVI captures (called "Seamless Capture" by Ulead), but you still cannot create a single file great than 4GB because of limitations in the FAT32 file system. This could be an issue when creating the MPEG files for your DVD projects.

I think both UVS 8 and UVS 9 can also perform Seamless Captures for MPEG2 in addition to DV AVI.

So why can't I get the DSW plugin to work as this would give me chained capture.

Having just trawled web - is DSW a DV capture plugin and will not work with analogue capture card so should I ask for my money back as VS9 is no better with analogue than VS4!
