Re: MOV file to MPG or to VS for edit or to make DVD
I think that VSX2 can handle (and convert for DVD) this high bitrate mpeg2 files. I use VSX2 nowadays to create1080p50 mpeg2 video's from my 1080p50 camcorder. The original fullhd 50p files are at 28mb/s avc/h264 ('avchd"). After editing I render as 1080p50 fullhd mpeg2 files with 50mb/s VBR.

Hi erdna
Unfortunately the video is using non standard properties which are neither HD or SD DVD.
So Video Studio cannot properly read or identify the actual video.
720 x 480 x 20000 is a strange combination.

Re: MOV file to MPG or to VS for edit or to make DVD
I'll go back to my reply in that FCP can produce Mac only files or can be told to produce a file that can be used by Windows machines.
Converting the Mac only file to one that windows can use is one option, but is a conversion too many. Asking the chap who has FCP and the Mac to output a windows compatible file will be the best in terms of quality.
Sorry for delay in replying, but I've been away for the weekend.
Ken,
Think of MOV as you do AVI.
It is exactly the same, but the Apple version, so our windows dv.avi is the same as Apples dv.mov, but as you know never the twain will meet in Apple v MS.
I'm currently having 126 clips captured by an Italian Mac from an HDv source and sent to me of my Brothers wedding for me to produce him a bluray wedding video, but of course I can't use any of the clips, so my friend who has a Mac is using it to make this conversion for me. We are having to make the conversion as sending back to Italy in the hope they have the original tapes and will send them over and then that they get here is maybe expecting too much.

Re: MOV file to MPG or to VS for edit or to make DVD
Ilene -- thanks for the new mpeg-2 with the bitrate set at 8000 kbps and otherwise DVD-ready. However, as you already know, VS shows it also has no audio, despite Gspot saying its audio is mpeg-1 layer 2 and that the codec is installed. And like the earlier file, it plays in media players like WMP with audio, but not in VS... GSpot also shows it is (correctly) program stream mpeg-2 and needs no further adjustment for it to be fully DVD-compatible. So I am stumped.
I also had a 'duh' moment when I realised that of course, while Corel might not make mpeg audio available any longer for DVDs, it certainly contains the codec since mpeg audio is *the* audio used by HDV camcorders (such as my Canon HV20) which I use all the time successfully, with audio, in X2, X3 and now X4!
But I simply have no idea why your video will not play the audio in your or my Video Studio...

Re: MOV file to MPG or to VS for edit or to make DVD
thanks for trying... I think I'm back to using MOV file directly, or ripping from his DVD, using "capture from imported media" and going with the scarcely noticeable degradation in quality.
ugh... so frustrating always to deal w MAC vs PC.
btw - windows dvd maker, reads the file just fine... there is just very little customization available for the menu screen!

Re: MOV file to MPG or to VS for edit or to make DVD
Curiously enough, I also get no sound when I insert the latest file in Windows DVD Maker and try to preview it. Yet you get sound in preview?
Though it is a bit counter-intuitive, can your Final Cut friend output in Transport Stream mpeg-2?
I also just converted your video to a .vob file using a third party conversion program, and then renamed .vob to .mpg. And this time the audio played happily in X4. (However, the program I used messed up the aspect ratio of the video). But the experiment gave me another idea. Gspot tells me the original audio is at 48,000 HZ and 384 kbps. The new file I created still has mpeg layer 2 audio, but at 44,000 Hz and 128 kbps. So I am wondering if your friend can adjust the audio output settings to the latter i.e. 44000 HZ and 128 kbps and leave it at 16 bit stereo. I imagine 196 kbps would also work since it is normally in the range played by VS and would give better audio quality.

Re: MOV file to MPG or to VS for edit or to make DVD
Hi Ilene Ken
Thanks for the second sample, but as Ken has described, very similar to the first but with a lower bit rate.
Now this may be not important but……I have played the video using VLC Player, It does play but with a few problems, interestingly when viewing the files properties it shows the Streams differently.
There are two Streams 0 and Stream 1
Ilene’s video shows Stream 0 as using Audio
With Stream 1 assigned to video.
I created my own video sample using X4
Now this video shows the Stream 0 as Video and obviously Stream 1 as Audio
Now this is getting a little complicated for my little brain, maybe there is nothing in this, just seems odd to me?
--------------------------------
I am again able to use Super to convert the video and play in VS
Ilene what problems are you having using the original Mov files? It it a Mac issue?

Re: MOV file to MPG or to VS for edit or to make DVD
Thge streams issue (from GSpot) was the reason I asked if her FCP friend could make a transport stream instead of the PS file he was making -- in case that had something to do with it.
But the more I think about it, the more I suspect that the audio properties -- and particularly the Hz value -- might be the problem...

Re: MOV file to MPG or to VS for edit or to make DVD
Hooray--- something that was said in the last exchange sparked something for my buddy and he was able to create a file for me that worked... he chose an option for mpg2 that was called "transport stream" -- he thought it was an intermediary codec and not a final codec? not really sure what that means but the file tested out well and rendered perfectly.
I have a screen shot of the properties, but I can't seem to figure out how to post to this site... I will email it to you, Ken and Trevor and then you can post for me?
hope it will be helpful to someone in the future....
Many thanks for all the support and guidance.

Glad that one worked! Though I would also like to know if the changing of the audio parameters also might have worked...

Hi Ilene
Very glad to hear you have finally created a video file that works. Thanks to Ken for his TS suggestion
One thing that puzzles me regarding your e-mail comments.
You said “THe clean mpg that i referred to is the DVD which HE burned for me and I ripped... not his MOV as the source”. .
Not to worry, at least you have a workable video file

Re: MOV file to MPG or to VS for edit or to make DVD
Ripping from his DVD to get an mpg file that plyed audio and video in VS was a work around solution. Sorry for the confusion. The MOV file he gave me directly didnt work so well.... I had quality issues despite it's size and format. For some reason that MOV file played perfect on a MAC but not on the PC so I wasn't able to use it. Still going to try to sort that out as well.
Thanks for the help!

Re: MOV file to MPG or to VS for edit or to make DVD
MOV files created on Mac machines will never, ever directly work on a PC. The reason is that the machines are totally different platforms. They are competitors in the marketplace. With some of the high-end Mac programs, such as FCP, you are able to produce video files for PCs, but must be specifically done. MPEG happens to be one format that is recognized as a cross-platform format.Ilene wrote:Ripping from his DVD to get an mpg file that plyed audio and video in VS was a work around solution.
