X4 constantly crashes during editing
I installed x4 the other day and it appeared to work fine. I have a Sony HD camcorder that I believe is AVCHD. I have been using and importing clips from this camera. I got the notice that an update was available and I updated the program. Since then, every time I try to edit a movie it constantly crashes. I try to import some music, it crashes. I came to the conclusion that it was the update causing it so I restored my computer to the day before I updated. It still crashes. I really do like the program, however, if it is going to constantly crash, it does me no good. Anything I can do to stop this? I searched the boards and couldn't find anything that matches my problem.
Thank you!
Thank you!

Hi
There have been some issues concerning crashes when using Mov and/or Mpeg4 type video.
Unfortunately the recommendations can be a little contradictory.
Reverting the QuickTime version has fixed problems for some users.
There is a post at the top of this forum giving details

What version of QuickTime are you using.?
Video Studio X4 provides 7.5.5
If you use I-Tunes reverting to an earlier version of QT may affect its performance.

Re: X4 constantly crashes during editing
I have had the problem with using latest versions of Quicktime for ages. My only solution, which I am getting fed up with, is to install Quicktime 7.6.0 (I keep it in my download folder) and then because I cannot use Itunes with this version, I have to reinstall itunes with a later version of Quicktime to sync my iphone etc. A real problem each time.
However when I then again revert to the earlier version of quicktime I can use VSX2 perfectly.

Re: X4 constantly crashes during editing
Thanks Robert, but the problem in this thread is with X4 and not X2. While I like everyone else had trouble with earlier versions of VS and Quicktime, with X4 I have no trouble with the latest version of QT. But some users still do. And that is what we are trying to work out...

Re: X4 constantly crashes during editing
Well, installing the older version of QT seems to have stopped the crashing but now, when I edit two different clips of .MOV files it is very very choppy. Its to the point that it makes it hard to edit. Any solutions for this? I really do like the program, I just wish I could use it normally.

Re: X4 constantly crashes during editing
I take what I previously said back. I installed SP1 and within 30 seconds it crashed. I am starting to get very frustrated with this program. I am aggravated because I really like it, but I am getting upset because I can't use it. I hope someone can help me so I can use it.

Re: X4 constantly crashes during editing
So, I decided to convert the .mts or .mov file into a HD AVI file using xilisoft and was able to edit and preview the clips. However, it is still choppy during editing preview. It also appears to have lost some quality. I am hoping someone can help me out.

Hi Mcleod
Choppy Video Playback……..
Editing HD video files will require the use of Smart Proxy.
Go to Settings-Smart Proxy Manager make sure it is Enabled. (should be selected by default)
Smart Proxy files are created automatically after inserting the file to the timeline, provided they are larger (Frame Size) as set in the Smart Proxy Settings
After inserting a video file to the timeline select Smart Proxy Queue Manager which will show the files being created
Viewing Smart Proxy File Manager will list the created proxy files as UPX files, having similar names
Once created an icon is placed within the thumbnail/clip in the timeline/library.
You can manually create a Proxy File, right click a clip in the timeline for options.
Can you confirm that the files have been created and that after re-booting the program that the files are still showing, that they have not mysteriously disappeared.
------------------------------------------
Your video files
Right click a file/clip in the timeline and select properties, what are they?
Do this for all types you are using.

Re: X4 constantly crashes during editing
Trevor,
Thank you, I will have to try that as soon as I get home. I know that it is enabled because I checked that this morning before I left.
Should I uninstall Service Pack 1? it seems every time I install it, it causes VX4 to crash.

Hi Mcleod
I don’t know how you can uninstall the service pack without uninstalling the full program.?
This is the link to the download page and has details of just what the update does?
I suppose if it works ok without the patch then yes I would run without, I had problems using X3 after installing its patch, so ran without.

Re: X4 constantly crashes during editing
For the life of me, I can't understand why the service pack causes VX4 to crash. It is really upsetting as I really like the program. I guess I could always just keep converting the .Mts/.Mov files to HD Avi. Rather annoying to have to constantly do that though. Not sure if the loss of quality was in my head or not. is there another format I should convert to?

Re: X4 constantly crashes during editing
As I just asked you in another thread, have you got hardware acceleration enable or disabled in Settings > Preferences > Performance? And if you switch from one to the other, does it affect the crashing?

Re: X4 constantly crashes during editing
It was enabled. I disabled per the other thread suggestion and VOILA, no more crashing! I LOVE IT..
However, I have noticed that whenever I click share and save the file as a HD video, I get a mysterious line that shows up in the middle of the screen at certain moments.

Re: X4 constantly crashes during editing
Ken, I certainly accept your comment. Will now seriously consider upgrading to X4, hoping that it will solve my problem of having to unistall and reinstall version 7.6 of Quicktime when I want to use Video Studio. Pity that Itunes only allows you to use it if you have the latest version of Quicktime
Thanks
Robert
Thanks

I've been having a similar problem with VS Pro... anytime I pull a mts file into multi-trim video mode and begin working it crashed my system. I'm do not have hardware acceleration on, in fact, those check boxes are grayed out.... any suggestions?
Thanks
