Selenium Toning

Post by raven4ns »

I used CS2 for a while as my son had it for his business needs. In it PS had presets for selenium tones and there was one that used a purple in the quad set and after some minor tweaking by me really had that selenium tone to it. The purple made the blacks very dense and the mid tones very rich looking.
I don't have the combination of the quad set I was using but is it possible to use a similar set with PSP X2? They used curves to adjust each color separately so the person using the quad could adjust it to their own tastes. I used to have the purple very subtle, at least to my eyes, which left the image very rich looking. Any help will be most appreciated, thank you.

Tim

I don't know about X2, but in X3 and X4 there's Effects> Photo Effects> Black And White Film.
You can choose the "filter color", which is basically like adding the filter in front of the lens back in the days of film. Of course this doesn't adjust for film characteristics but that's a whole different topic. Anyways you can either adjust the pointer to a color you'd like, or you can click Suggest Color. Then there's also Clarify (local contrast) and brightness controls to get that look that you're after.

After that you can add a second layer, fill with the color you'd like, reduce opacity to taste.

Also, I don't know if it's in X2 or if it was new in X3 but there's an affect called Time Machine, but that doesn't give much in the way of control over the process. There's a few presets, only half of which are black and white, but the results can be close to what you want.

You might want to look at Topaz Labs B&W Effects plug-in as it has some presets for selenium and will allow you to tweak the quad tone settings. It works nicely with PSP too.

You can checkout that Selenium Toning means and looks like at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Selenium_toning/

It points towards more like a variation of the sepia effect than being a black and white effect.

Using PSP X4, you can click use the time machine effect by clicking on Effect > PHOTO EFFECT > TIME MACHINE or Effect > PHOTO EFFECT > SEPIA TONING... then just play with the setting until you got the toning that you like.

Then you can adjust the hue and saturation of the image by going to ADJUST > HUE AND SATURATION > COLORIZE... or HUE/SATURATION/LIGHTNESS... then just play with the settings again.
