DVD for Germany?

Post by rob720 »

I need to create a DVD of my video production to be viewed in Germany. I understand that their zone number is different than ours here in the U.S., and that I need to burn the DVD in that particular code. I'm a bit lost on this. Any advice? Thanks so much in advance.

I understand that "region free" DVDs will play in all DVD players assuming the same format (e.g. PAL, SECAM, NTSC, etc). There are some programs on the market (freeware) that will remove the region encoding on material already encoded. All of the DVD's I've authored have no region encoding built in!

Thanks for your help. This "region free" DVD to which you refer...is this a special blank DVD that I need to buy or are you telling me that what I author in Ulead will burn as region-free?

The region encoding stuff is a part of the DVD specification, and is a part of the security system that is built in. In the USA, the region is "region 1." If you try to play a region 2 DVD on a region 1 player, it simply won't work. To the best of my knowledge (I really hadn't thought about it before now), the DVDs I've authored were region free automatically which will play on any region encoded DVD player. As a sidelight, your DVD burner comes region free, and as a part of the set up, you are supposed to tell it which region to support. The specification states that you can do this 5 fimes in the hardware. Then it, too, will fail. (Much ado about nothing in my humble opinion.)
