AutoRecovery (formerly known as AutoSave)

Corel have hijacked the term "AutoSave" in X4.
With X3 and previously, as far back as PSP9, "AutoSave" referred to the following feature:

"Paint Shop Pro can automatically save all open images on a set schedule. These autosaved files can help you recover your work if your computer crashes. When Paint Shop Pro starts after a crash, it will open any autosaved files it finds".

Now, with X4, "AutoSave" is changed to "Enable AutoSave in the Adjust workspace" or more fully:

"Corel PaintShop Pro lets you automatically save your work as you move between tasks. For example, if you make some edits in the Adjust workspace, and switch to another photo or workspace, your changes will be applied automatically".

In both cases, as the help system explains "To find out where Corel PaintShop Pro saves the autosaved files, choose File Preferences File Locations and select the Undo/Temporary Files folder from the File Type list".

To avoid confusion, I am renaming the original AutoSave as "AutoRecovery". I found out where Corel PSP saves the AutoSaved files and the AutoRecovery files too. X4 still writes the AutoRecovery files but doesn't use them at all
When X4 starts, it firstly deletes all the old AutoRecovery files so that there is no possibility that "When Paint Shop Pro starts after a crash, it will open any autosaved [AutoRecovery] files it finds"

Please can Corel re-instate the old AutoSave system, under the nane AutoRecovery

As no-one has responded to my suggestion, I can only think of a few explanations:

• Lightning never strikes
• X4 never crashes
• You always save your files every minute or so
• You don't understand
• You don't know where your Temp Files are

I will join you on this one. I never used anything but the edit workspace on any version of PSP. I have scripts I run to edit my photos and have no desire to do it all manually in the adjust workspace. I have Auto save and Auto Preserve all enabled.

I had three photos up today and ran my workflow scripts on them. They are not intensive, the photos were not large, and everything went well until I actually went to SAVE them myself before I continued working on them - blam - PSP crashed - just shut down. I thought for sure one of those Auto save options would have recovered my work - but noooooooooooooooo. Could not find a single recovery file on my PC anywhere. I am so p*ssed. Even trying to save your work every minute or so, does NOT work if it crashes.

Why oh why did this wonderful program let itself go to hell in a handbasket? They are trying too hard to be Photoshop, I think. I have news for you - I OWN Photoshop, and if I wanted to use it, I would, in a heartbeat. But I loved (past tense!) the photo tools, layer tools, etc. in PSP. I have come near tears and hair ripping more than I ever did trying to learn photoshop. I have so much $$ invested in PSP over the years. Please listen to us and make this program useful again!

Oh - I'm also on a Corel User Panel - but do you think they ever ask anything about PSP? Please! Ask away! I'd love to embellish on my frustrations!!!! Or are you actually trying to tank this program so you won't have to sell it anymore?

I too would like a response on this - PSP X4 crashed on me, and there appears to be no auto recover possible

I don't think I have ever experienced an issue where X3 crashed while working. I don't recall if X3 has layer groups or not - but using layergroups I am able to crash X4 quite easily. If X3 can recover from a crash using the tmp files but x4 cant... I may return my copy of X4 and continue to use X3. I don't see that I am getting much more with X4 to begin with... so why deal with a program that can't recover from crashes when my previous version works just fine, hrm....

I have reported this problem of temp files in X4 through Corel your way..
they are looking into it..
I have renamed a folder C:\Users\Admin\AppData\Local\Temp\PSP version X4 temp files
it works but the problem is that after a crash the files are in there
but are not accessible..if anyone knows how to open them would love to know..
I had a crash last night and hadn't save my work, so lost it all..

After bugging Corel for some time, they have now told me that in X4 they did 'remove' the old AutoSave facility that was in X3 and older versions.
They have promised me

"Auto-recovery will be back in X5. Also the naming will be reviewed."

Good to know. Now people can stop looking for something that's apparently not there. I hope as we head towards X5 that Corel asks users how they feel about removing features before they go ahead and do it. Well, I can dream, can't I.

Well, good for X5... but I own x4 now... I don't see why it can't be fixed for X4... unless they plan on giving X4 owners a copy of X5 for free...

Since X4 only recently came out, it is not going to be soon... At a rough guess, the fourth quarter of next year.

In a way that's a relief. I would hate to think that Corel was going to rush to release X5 and the problems with X4 would not get resolved, basically resulting in "Paint Shop Pro - The lost version" in which case X5 would probably be just as buggy. I have seen it happen before...
