Paintshop X4, Auto Preserve - Not Working.
PSP X4, the auto preserve is not saving the original.
I have the "enable auto preserve" checked and it says the auto preserve is on when saving a picture, but it's not saving the original.
Is there another setting I'm missing?
Never mind. I see the other thread on this same problem.
The auto preserve was working when I first installed X4 and then just stopped. I guess I'm not alone with this problem either.
When is the first patch for X4 due out?

@ Hooterville and all others who have this problem
Auto-Preserver is working but unfortunately as Hidden Folder. We have escalated it yesterday.
Current workaround: to get your images, go to Start - Control Panel - Folder options - View and enable "Show hidden files and folders".

Thanks, Simone
That's the trick. When will the first X4 update be out to address problems like this?

Huh...I didn't even notice. That would explain why I thought auto-preserve was working for me, I always have my hidden files and folders showing. You would have thought the semi-translucent folder icon would have given it away but I just really don't notice that anymore.

@ Hooterville
To all who now enable the "Show hidden files and folders": don't be surprised that you get shown more folders in your C;\ drive and other drives, which look semi-translucent as LeviFiction described. These are system files. Please don't delete any of these other semi-translucent files, otherwise you will damage your system.

Re: Paintshop X4, Auto Preserve - Not Working.
Just a quick update in this matter:
After escalating the "Paintshop X4, Auto Preserve - Not Working." topic as bug, I learned that keeping the "Corel Auto Preserve" folder as hidden folder is the new strategy to prevent people from deleting their original pictures.
I tested the functionality for the new behaviour and have noticed a difference compare to previous PSP versions. In older versions, if you overwrote an image, the image in "Corel Auto Preserve" had always been updated. This doesn't happen now; this folder always keeps the first-time saved image.
Sounds complicate?
Example:
I edit image.jpg and save it on my desktop.
PSPX4 creates additionally a "Corel Auto Preserve" and puts an original image.jpg as backup into it.
I change my mind, reopen image.jpg and add a text (e.g.).
When I save the new edited image, PSPX4 will overwrite the image.jpg on my desktop, but not in the "Corel Auto Preserve" folder.
Generally, if you want to access the "Corel Auto Preserve" folder, go to Start - Control Panel - Folder options - View and enable "Show hidden files and folders". You will now find this folder in the same path where you saved your image.
The new behaviour requires maybe a cleaning of your system from time to time.

You have to be kidding? They are going to leave it as hidden folders? I hope not.Simone Corel UK wrote:Just a quick update in this matter:

It's would be great if there was an option to retrieve the (original) preserve photo, from the auto-preserve folder, so that the original will remain hidden.

Re: Paintshop X4, Auto Preserve - Not Working.
I am a bit confused. For me, this Auto-Preserve thing is a big deal. And...it is definitely a bug. I installed PSP X4 a couple of months ago and have had no problems to speak of. The other day I was editing some pics when the system just stopped giving me a folder and saving the original
I checked here, found out about the hidden file thing, and what do you know...there they were. Except, they will not show on my Manage screen. How do I get them to list along with all of my other pic files?
Thanks for your help.
Larry

Re: Paintshop X4, Auto Preserve - Not Working.
What a crock. Talk about CYA. This isn't a "feature", it is a horrible bug or a very, very, very poor decision.
I guess I'm turning off auto-preserve and go back to the old habit of creating an "Originals" folder and placing in it a copy of the parent folder's images.
When I upgraded to v4, I just thought auto-preserve was broken, my installation was bad, or something similar. But when I copied a photo directory to my portable device then all of a sudden I was seeing two of everything. Digging deeper, I discovered it was the hidden auto-preserve folder. So I manually had to clean up dozens of folders on my portable drive - and my desktop - grrrrr. After turning on the option to see hidden folders, I've found I've crapped up my directory structure everywhere. If I edited an image on my desktop then it's crapped up. If I tweaked a downloaded image in my downloads folder then it's crapped up with extra folders. Anywhere I chose to edit an image I've crapped up the folder. I can't properly manage the contents of hidden files, unless I choose to show them and then that puts my machine at risk because others that use the machine may delete what they shouldn't. Oh, of course I can just change viewing options when I want to work with images.
What an awful mess. I almost abandoned Corel at v3. Right now, it's not likely I'll be upgrading to v5 when it arrives. If this issue isn't patched (with at least the option to make the directory visible) then the 'not likely' will change to 'definitely'

Re: Paintshop X4, Auto Preserve - Not Working.
Today is the first day that I have PSP X4 installed on a week old Win7 Home Premium laptop, for I had to let the operating system jump through some hoops to install PSP X4 in "Win Vista SP2" compatibility mode, or not get it installed at all.
Thanks for the heads up in this thread that I fortuitously stumbled across at this time. I need to mull over this new to me Auto Preserve concept with hidden folders reportedly splattered all over the computer, in addition to learning the rest of PSP.
Add edit: Upon further reflection, I realize that I first became aware of hidden User AppData files while researching Corel's Media One thumbs indexing on my then new Vista computer in 2008 or so. Corel Media One came bundled with Corel/Ulead PhotoImpact X3.

Re: Paintshop X4, Auto Preserve - Not Working.
As a new user of Paintshop I was confused and surprised that I could not find my preserved original photos. The solution to turn on Show hidden files and folders is helpful but they are turned off by default for a reason. My solution was to turn on Show hidden files and folders, navigate to the Corel Auto-Preserve folder, right click, create shortcut, then turn the hidden files and folders back off. I now have access to the Corel folder and all others remain hidden. Hope this helps
Re: Paintshop X4, Auto Preserve - Not Working.
Good Evening!
My 'Recent Files' is grayed out, and the auto-preserve is not working even though I have checked 'View Hidden Files'. How can I find these hidden files?
