Audio goes missing in VHS video capture

Post by Chintzy »

For some reason when trying to capture, though I can hear the audio coming out of my speakers perfectly fine, the file invariably ends up with a completely flat audio track - with a slight fuzz and the occasional faint clicking sound as the only evidence that audio was captured at all.

Any ideas what's causing this? I would much appreciate any helpful input.

a little too chintzy on your information :)

what are you using to capture the video? what devices are involved, and do you have your input properly selected (mic-in or line-in) if you are using your computer's sound card?

Sorry! Good point. Using an MSI FX5200-VT128 capture card with VideoFactory 2. The RCA cords run from the VCR to this device labelled "PersonalCinema" which in turn takes it along this thick cord to the capture card and the blue input on the sound card. I don't know where to choose between mic/line-in, but this same install used to work, many many months ago, so I'm assuming it's currently at the right setting (unless there's a way of testing otherwise?).

If there's anything else I'm missing just let me know.

With some further experimentation, it seems that MPEGs don't capture sound at all, or at least the sound track is absolutely silent, while AVIs capture a hiss or fuzz or whatever that is constant.

In the advanced properties for capturing make sure the correct audio
input is selected for RECORDING.

Also make sure the windows mixer or the soundcards mixer has that
input as the active RECORDING input.

Usually the audio input from the capture device is connected to the "Line-In"
of the soundcard. That will let you hear the previewing of the video while it's
displayed in the capture screen.

You also need to activate the SAME input as the selected recording input.
Sometimes other sound programs change these settings and you have to
reset them to the proper switches.

Mpeg's capture audio as one file.
AVI's capture audio as one file also.

Well it works now - I didn't realize only one input source could be active at once, and it was the mic for some reason. Thanks for your help and have a great summer.
