PaintShop Pro X4 file format backward compatibility with X3?

PaintShop Pro X4 file format backward compatibility with X3?
I tried save two bitmap layers with some mask in X4 in .pspimage and can not open it in X3...

When you Save As, select PSPImage, click Options and make sure it saves as whatever former version you're going to open in later, in your case X3. I still have PSP X and PSP 9, but I haven't used 9 in a long time.

To add on what DF mention, you can actually save a file up to (down to) PSP 5.
