PSP For Scrapbookers and PSP X4
I love PSP and am totally addicted! I am also a digital scrapbooker.
http://delspspemporium.blogspot.com/
I would like to see Corel com out with a version geared more to scrapbooking than photography.
I am using the trial for PSP X4 and I will not be purchasing it. The grayed out tools are hard to see. I do not like the new wider layer palette with the very narrow scroll bar. I also do not like clicking on the Icon for PSP at the bottom of my screen and seeing a tab for every file I have open.
Flip Vertical & Flip Horizontal changes from Flip & Mirror does nothing. More complicated, does not make a better product. PSP X3 is about as much "advancement" as I can stand.
If I wanted Photoshop I would have bought Photoshop. I want my scrapbooking friendly PSP back! Since PSP X, their product has moved farther away from scrapbooking and more to photography.

Re: PSP For Scrapbookers and PSP X4
What do you mean the changes to Flip Horizontal and Flip Vertical does nothing? We have a small topic on whether or not the new functionality was a bug and how to get the old functionality back.
And I'm curious as to how PSP is not friendly to scrapbookers? What are you looking for specifically?

Here is their ad for PSP X4:
The Ultimate photo-editing software
Corel® PaintShop™ Pro X4 Ultimate gives you the freedom to create your best images—ever. Along with all the photo-editing power of PaintShop™ Pro X4, you get award-winning Nik® Color Efex Pro™ 3.0 photographic filters, your choice of 21 high-quality images from Fotolia and free Picture Tubes™. Plus, the new HDR module, photo blending features and an updated RAW Lab put everything you need to manage, create and share incredible photos in your hands!
Where does it state for digital scrapbookers?
Compare their Font Tool from PXP 2 to PSP X3 & X4. Better? Not to me.
Add to that the "new" change to going back into PSP from another program. Now in PSP X4 you get a tab for every file you have open.
It's disappointing and I refuse to buy another update!

And you can turn tabs off. I don't think it was designed as a digital scrapbooking application. It was always more of a photo editing program that had features you could use for scrapbooking (IMHO). Spend a little time learning the changes and you may still like it. There are features I don't like, but it's way better than X3.

Re: PSP For Scrapbookers and PSP X4
EDITED: Because it sounded ruder than I meant it.
While I have not done scrapbooking in about two years the majority of what I did was in the field of photography so you can imagine my confusion at the ditaste for the focus on those tools. For me better tools for dealing with photos was and is a big plus for me. Most of my focus, as of late, has been on vector graphics and digital painting both of which still benefit from those tools originally designed for photos.
I know the Text tool in X3 was horrible but I find the one in X4 much more useable. The text tool is improved compared to X3 making the use of on screen editing very useful. You gain back in X4 what you lost in X3. And you can still use the dialog box if that is what you prefer.
"Add to that the 'new' change to going back into PSP from another program." - I have no idea what this is so I don't know how to respond to that.
Tabs, as was said above, can be turned off. I find, like others do, that the ball was somewhat dropped when it came to maximinzing the windows as they don't make it easy to get back to windowed mode like it had been in previous versions of PSP but I think that's the only area where they failed. Maximizing into tabbed view offers close to the same layout as regular maximized mode. Maximizing reverts to tabs but they aren't visually distracting and give you pretty close (not exact obviously) to the same single image feel. And considering I was maximized most of the time that I was working with scrapbooking work I don't view tabs as a hindrance to scrapbooking.
In fact it prevents me from having to minimize just to grab the other image I have opened. And you can drag and drop layers between tabs in X4 bringing what was once a Windowed only thing into both realms.
Whether or not you find tabs useful is entirely a personal matter. There are photographers on here who hate the tabbed view so it seems silly to refer to it as a photographer centric feature. Tabs are not specific to the medium you're working in.
Now I do understand that the lack of a line indicating its use for scrapbookers might be a bit off-putting at first but I also don't see as it matters. I don't remember the other advertising campaigns specifically mentioning "Scrapbookers" but even if they did it's a tag-line not a fact of the software. Technically it doesn't say "great for hand creating textures for 3D games" but that doesn't mean it isn't useful for that.
And if there are specific things you want for scrapbooking you have to ask.
I'm sorry you're disappointed with the software but you have to give something to get something. You want a focus on scrapbookers tell them what you as a scrapbooker can use.

You may also want to visit http://creationcassel.com/store, another great site for scrapbooking using PSP plus they offer scripts that you can download and use on your projects.

Re: PSP For Scrapbookers and PSP X4
Thanks for the mention of my sites, Abiel and wds937 .
I would like to add a little note to the opening poster. I am a scrapbooker and i can see that the needs in scrapbooking is a bit different than for photography, and i would like to just shed a little light on the "discrepancies".
Although scrapbooking is about showing off photos, and therefore any photo editing feature can be a big plus, scrapbooking has evolved quite a bit to encompass more of designing, and adding embellishments, or creating effects to OTHER elements than the photos. For example, folding, bending, rolling a ribbon is something scrapbookers will want to do. Add textures to papers at a different angle, clip photos to a template shape in fewer clicks, write journaling within a set shape (with automatic text wrapping), use large brushtips (our work is usually on a 3600x3600 canvas), are some of the features that scrapbookers are really looking for, and those have not really been incorporated into newer versions of PSP. A lot has been done for photo editing, and that is great, but generally speaking, i dont think scrapbookers are going to need all those PHOTO features, and would like more GRAPHIC ones, if you can see the different angle.
So as you can see, scrapbooking might use many of the same features, commands and tools as photographers, but just like photographers might have little use for "scrapbooking" tools, scrapbookers have little use for some of the great "photography" tools. Since more has been focussed on photgraphy, scrapbookers are still waiting for some of their favorite tools. Maybe PSPX5?

Cassel, I don't actually do scrapbooking but I do create and use similar graphics to make collages for greeting cards and calendars, etc. Are there scrapbooking software programs on the market that do all of the things that you mentioned? I've noticed that a lot of scrapbookers use Photoshop and Photoshop Elements to create their images. Do they have more options than PSP for doing the things you mentioned?

Maybe a separate Scrapbook Edition with all the bells, whistles and features that scrapbookers crave?
PSPX9 | PSP2020 | PSP2021| PSP2022 | PSP2023 & PhotoMirage installed; PSPX | PSPX2 thru PSP2019 owned but not installed

A Scrapbooking Add-on would be great! Maybe PSP could have a core, and have either Photograhy or Scrapbooking add-on (or both if one wants both). Hum.... yes, we can dream!

Yes,Cassel, I don't actually do scrapbooking but I do create and use similar graphics to make collages for greeting cards and calendars, etc. Are there scrapbooking software programs on the market that do all of the things that you mentioned? I've noticed that a lot of scrapbookers use Photoshop and Photoshop Elements to create their images. Do they have more options than PSP for doing the things you mentioned?
- PSE and PS do text wrapping within a set shape,
- PS does now have the Puppet wrap that does allow bending more than the warp mesh can.
- PS and PSE both do "clipping mask" allowing to move an image, adjust it behind a shape and clip it to it in one click (since the initial post, i coded a script that does exactly that: http://creationcassel.com/store/index.p ... cts_id=253 )
and no... As for angled textures, i dont know, and for brush size, i dont know if PS and PSE can do more than PSP does now. I dont have PS or PSE so i only know by what i have seen other do or what they say.
I have to say though, that PSP is probably also underutilized by scrapbookers, for lack of information; most scrapbook tutorials are done with PS and PSE. Products, like actions, styles, and paths, are numerous for PS and fewer for PSP.
But... PSP has those tubes, and used as more than just "stamped images", they can be extremely powerful, like in these tubes i have created for PSP scrappers: http://creationcassel.com/store/index.p ... x&cPath=15 (PS gals have asked me if i could convert them for PS!) and scripts that can be much more powerful than most actions i have seen (and yes, i have many of those in my store too, where i am specializing)
So, instead of spending $600 on a graphic program like PS, or $100 for PSE our beloved PSP scrappers would definitely see their favorite program meet those extra needs, and then, the program would become POWERFUL, EASY to use, and AFFORDABLE for new scrapbookers, and then Corel could tap into a great market that would be delighted in not having to spend $600 for a program that is "often thought" to be better because it is more "visible".

Re: PSP For Scrapbookers and PSP X4
I'm a digital scrapper too and I have to agree that it seems that X4 is more difficult for me to use. And I've been using PSP since Version 4 way back when.
Someone mentioned turning the tabs off. I despise the tabs. Can anyone tell me how to eliminate them permanently?
I can uncheck tabbed in the window options - but that's not a permanent solution. As a scrapper I need to be able to zoom in on my pane (usually to resize image layers) and I'm used to double clicking on the title bar to open the window and fill the workspace, resize my layer, then just scroll back to restore the window pane and all my open files in the workspace. No more - now if I double click, ALL my open files become tabbed. Horrible!
Then if I go to the top, click on windows, click on tabbed - the windows just cascade. That's horrible too, because all the windows are the same size regardless of what's inside them and are no longer as I had arranged them in my workspace - they should just restore to the original size and position like it used to. Because as a scrapper I'll have as many as 20-30 elements open at once - and each window has to be resized AND repositioned after tabbing is taken back off in order to view the elements properly.
And speaking of multiple files. I am so sick of the new "You're opening more than 10 files at a time" message that I could throw up.
The organizer does not work for me either. If I open a computer folder, all the items inside appear in it. But as soon as I try to move one to a tray - or even into my workspace - they all completely disappear.
Autosave and Autopreserve - another pain. I need Auto save in Edit mode. I don't need 1000 copies of everything I do in a hundred PSP-generated folders on my computer. I just want it to recover what I've done in a crash - out of the temp folder that Auto Save uses - and from what I've read even that doesn't work anymore. I was finally forced to turn Auto Preserve on for my edits after working for hours on two layouts that disappeared into thin air on a crash. And no, I do NOT save my work every 10 minutes because I'm used to PSP doing it for me. I don't even see a timed save option anymore. And I'm not even sure Auto Preserve is the option I need if PSP crashes.
I love Paint Shop Pro. I teach Paint Shop Pro for scrapbookers. I'm embarrassed by this new version and refuse to allow anyone to pay me to attempt to learn how to use it - pointless when I can't do the same.
I know there are more "improvements" that are annoying, but I just found this board. I think I'll be back!!
