As a very long time user of Paint Shop (back to the early JASC days) and using the program primarily for producing bmp and jpg files with lots of graphics, an irritation in later versions has been the need to 'flatten' the layers periodically while working on an image. In past versions (don't remember how far past) one could set defaults such that you automatically worked in a single layer. I don't specifically remember how this was done (only that it could be done) and have not 'rediscovered' how to do it in my current X3 version and assume it will be the same in my (on order) X4. Is there a way to default into single layer work?
BTW: I strongly second the dislike of the graphite color scheme so certainly hope X4 gets 'fixed' to allow one to get rid of it.
I also note that after using the pop-up that appeared in X3 startup to order X4, my X3 became inoperable and had to reload it!

I'm afraid I don't understand...if you don't want to deal with layers just don't make new layers.
I understand that a few commands might want to make new layers but you can tell those commands not to do so. And as long as you're careful, no need to be reckless anyway, with selections they won't automatically create new layers. And if you did want to be reckless with it you can turn off the "Auto-action" in your general program preferences dialog to not promote selections to full-layers all the time. So it never automatically creates new layers from selections.
You can also turn off the warnings when saving out images so that you don't get annoyed by it telling you it needs to "Flatten" the image due to restrictions. It'll just flatten it and you don't have to worry.
Turn off the layers palette so you don't see it. Sure it's not a 1-click solution but the options are there for not having to deal with layers if you don't want to.

Re: LAYER DEFAULT--PSP X3, X4
Actually you have exactly answered my question which was to point me to exactly where you turn off the layering. I have found the controls and set them. Thanks.
