Have posted in another forum that I'll "upgrade to X4 right away" but after reading about the Graphite Theme.. well slam on the brakes!! Have used PSP9 for years and decided to go with X3 earlier this year, and absolutely could not stand the black workspace. If X4 is only comes in Graphite with monochrome icons (whatever they're called) then No Go on an upgrade. There you have it, Corel sales take a hit.

p.s. An extensive user of PNG file format, I'd need to understand the `Save As´ issue better before upgrading.

I just downloaded and installed the X4 version and yes, the graphite theme sucks !
- I don't like dark interface as it is less readable
- White/gray icons are bad as they're less recognizable (plus the fact that they're not backward compatible, forcing people to re-learn everything)
- The icons are bigger, bigger icons means less space for the PICTURE !
- The workspace stuff is just useless for me as I use only the "Edit" panel
- I don't want a "paintshop lightroom" anyway ! Stop copying Adobe please !

I'm so glad I only downloaded the 30 day trial version and kept my money in my pocket. I've not upgraded since PSP 8 (the last real JASC version, I believe). I may try X3 as it seems from what I've read here that I can opt out of the grey on grey theme. It wouldn't be so bad if I could up the contrast of the text, but even that has eluded me so far.

The only reason I registered for the board is to echo this, the Graphite theme is horrible! If I had know before purchasing you could not switch back to the standard that has been there since JASC days I never would have bought it. It looks like a programmer designed it and that is almost always NOT a good idea. Doesn't Corel have UI people working for them? If the answer is yes and they condoned this they need to be replaced. Skin the darned thing and let people chose their own if you want to dabble in poor design schemes so at least the long time users can still use the product. Where are most of your sales? I would be willing to bet the installed base upgrades. You failed big time on this one Corel!

There has been a lot of discussion on the dark theme throughout this board and others. Also, during beta testing we complained loudly to the Development team and they said they heard us but could not make the change prior to the scheduled launch date. As Levi mentioned earlier in this thread, Corel told us the ability to change the dark interface and add colored icons would be worked on for an upcoming service pack. We are all anxiously awaiting the service pack and if Corel comes through, this will become a non-issue. Let's hope. . .

So... We are now in November, my trial of X4 has long since run out, and I'm not purchasing until I see the first update.
Are there any vague indications yet, when it might arrive?

Same here. So far, PSP X4 is unuseable for me (TIFF file saving issue).

Nope, no indications at all.

We have been promised it'll be beta-tested before official release and the beta has not even come out yet.

Hello Corel? Anybody listening? Any update on this? The Graphite Workspace is just too tiring -- like working in a dark broom closet!

Yo, Corel sales department: Your techies are dragging their feet and killing your sales. We all want to upgrade, but we are graphics people, we like color and can't bear a bad interface, so we are going to stick with not-X4 until the interface gets fixed!

Unbelievable. An critical little thing that should have never got past QA. But now needs to be corrected by, say, yesterday!

Corel fixed that in Paint Shop Pro Service Pack 1.
here is their answer on my complain:

Thank you for contacting Corel Customer Support. Please close the program, download and install this patch:

PaintShop Pro X4 - Service Pack 1
http://www.corel.com/akdlm/6763/downloa ... X4_SP1.exe

Once installed, launch the program and kindly reset the workspace of PaintShop Photo Pro X4; click on FILE >> Preferences >> Reset Preferences. Check all the boxes except the last check box. Click on OK.

To change the workspace theme, please go to View menu >> Workspace Color and select the desired workspace theme.

Re: X4 themes in Service Pack 1

A big improvement: it is much easier to deal with menus, tools, etc. Thank you!

It would even better to have control over color of the edit window background too, however. In light grey theme, this is still dark grey!!!

And it would be nice to have more of my preferences retained on application of new service packs & other updates.

Oh well.

Have been using PaintShop Pro X4 Service Pack 1 for awhile now. Very happy. The new interface changes made all the difference for me.

I've downloaded and tried to install the service pack, but it won't accept, says no update is necessary. There is no option for changing this awful dark background under View, even after resetting the preferences. Just wasting more and more time trying to get it to work.

I hate this blasted thing so much I haven't used it even once.

The trial version won't let you apply a service pack. Yes, Corel really shouldn't have trial versions that don't have the service pack code already included in it, but they just don't see it that way for some reason.
