Capture setting & crashing

Ok, try this:

Go to the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Ulead Systems\Ulead VideoStudio\8.0 directory and open the file HerCap.ini using Notepad.

In this file, you will find a number of capture plugins under the [CAPTURE_PLUGIN] section. One of these will be for the Plextor device -- I'm not sure what the name is, but it will hopefully be obvious when you look at the file contents.

Copy the line for the Plextor device to the corresponding HerCap.ini file for UVS V9 -- the path for that will be similar to the first, except the version number is different, so instead of ending in 8.0, it will end in 9.0. Also make sure to adjust the number at the end of the CapturePluginPath entry so it is unique, and that you don't add any spaces before the equal sign.

Next, you will need to copy the capture plugin itself to the UVS 9 directory so it can access it. Copy the DLL that implements the plugin from the C:\Program Files\Ulead Systems\Ulead VideoStudio 8.0 directory to C:\Program Files\Ulead Systems\Ulead VideoStudio 9.0. Hopefully it doesn't have any depencies on other DLLs, or it won't load without copying additional files.

Now start UVS 9 and see if the Plextor device is usable.

Well....that corrected the problem with the Plextor plugin. Now I see that in the available options, but it is telling me there is no capture driver installed or no device to capture from. But I know the Plextor is working fine, so I don't know why it is telling me that there is no capture driver installed. It just seems to be one thing after another. If you have any other suggestions, please let me know. I appreciate your help.

Thanks

My guess is that there are other files that need to be copied to make the Plextor plugin work. Are there any other files in the C:\Program Files\Ulead Systems\Ulead VideoStudio 8.0 directory that look like they might be part of the plugin? They might have the letter PX in the name.

Well, I can't recognize any that might be for the Plextor hardware. Do you know why the files would be in the VS8 directory and not in the VS9 directory? What process put those files in the VS8 directory? If I knew that, I could just do whatever I needed to to get the files in there. Something had to load them in there. The Plextor hardware was installed prior to the VS8 installation, so I am not sure why they wouldn't also have been in the VS9 directory. Anyway, let me know if you have any other suggestions.

The UVS plugin architecture seems to look for them there, all of the standard plugins that come with the program are located in that directory.

The only way the drivers could have wound up there is if the installation CD that came with the Plextor copied them there. I'd take a look at the CD and see if there is a separate installer there, or a folder or CAB file for the drivers.

When I purchased the upgrade to VS9 from the ulead website, it installed it in a new directory. Do you think the upgrade to VS9 should have overwritten the existing VS8? I just went ahead and let it install in it's own directory, but if it were installed over the VS8 it would have the files available. I don't really want to do that though.

When I look at the CD there is a directory for the WinDVR 5 program that came with the Plextor. It is an application that captures the video. That would probably be where the files I need would be, right? I see a couple of zip files with cab extensions. (data1.cab and data2.cab) Could these be the ones I need?

I don't think the WinDVR files have anything to do with it, that's a separate program from a separate company, and it probably uses a different plugin. Also, just copying the CAB (cabinet) files itself won't do the trick, these are compressed archives similar to ZIP files, and the contents would have to be extracted from the CAB files.

Installing UVS 9 over a UVS 8 installation AND fixing up the HerCap.ini file as mentioned before might get the Plextor going with UVS 9, provided the setup program isn't smart enough to detect that you are installing over an old version and uninstall the existing files.

I sent an email to Plextor regarding this, and they told me the retail version of VS9 is not compatible with the Plextor hardware. I don't understand why, but I am going to call them to find out. After that I will call Ulead and find out what's up.

Thanks for your help. I would have never guessed that VS9 wouldn't be compatible, especially since the VS8 came with the hardware.

I'm not convinced that the Plextor tech support people gave you a straight answer -- I'm fairly sure there is a way to make the device work with UVS 9, and that you are most of the way there.

If you feel adventurous, you can always install UVS 8 again, and then install UVS 9 on top of it as discussed before.

Another thing we could do is ask someone else who has UVS 8 installed (that excludes me) to post a sorted directory listing of their installation, which you could compare with your own installation. Any files that you have which do not appear in the other installation could be related to the Plextor device.

I think the way I would prefer to do it is to see if someone else has VS8 installed and get a listing of their directory as you suggested. You are obviously more familiar with using this web board, so how would we go about getting someone to do that? I think that would be the best thing for me.

Thanks again

Hi
I noticed your thread on here. I just purchased this drive, and the same questions occurred to me. I had called Plextor earlier, and was told similar stories Visual Studio 9 isn't compatible, so you are left with not being able to take advantages of new features, unless you want to run separate apps.

Calling Ulead you sit on hold forever.

THoff,
I have VS8 installed and can attempt this, If I knew how, without having to type it out. I guess take a series of screen shots? Or is there a program that can do this?

Ill probably test doing this over weekend, see how the device looks on version 8 se, vs the default trial install of 9, then install it over it, and see if it works as well.

Hopefully, there is an easy way to copy tapes (be it vcr, or older cam tapes) and convert them easily to divx (which makes the most sense for easy storage). I read about the long conversion times (hardware encoding), is this the case?

Tks
