Paint Shop Pro X 4

Post by Limey711 »

Installed PSP x4 no problems, but when I try to import photographs from my 40D and I have selected the pics that I want to import I get an error message and the import stops almost immediately, so I cannot import any pics. I thought PSP X 3 might be in conflict with PSP X4 so I un-installed PSP x 3 and tried again to import, but I still get the same error message. Am I doing something wrong.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forums!

However, I am sorry -- but you haven't given us all that much to go on. First, I am assuming by '40D' you are referring to the Canon EOS 40D... Yes, you may think this obvious. But it is always useful to give the full information up front.

Next, can you tell us exactly how you are trying to import? And what is the exact error message? And what format were you trying to use for the import? RAW?

FWIW, X3 and X4 can exist quite independently on the same computer (indeed with other earlier versions), so there was no need to uninstall X3.

Although the RAW utility has improved in X4, I would still use the software that came with your Canon: Digital Photo Professional.
Sorry Corel, but using the X4 RAW converter still isn't as good as using DPP, which is excellent.
How did you dowload your images? Or tried to..

X3 and X4 are two separate programs, you need not have uninstalled X3.

I was trying to import Raw images from my Canon EOS 40D, PSP X4 recognises that my camera is attached, the error message I get after I had selected the images that I wanted to import and clicked on import, was An error has occurred while trying to read from the file.
I have managed to import some of the images, but now after I have made minor changes, to a file and go to save the changes, PSP X 4 crashes and closes down, very frustrating, I wish I had not bothered to upgrade now from PSP X 3 Ultimate.

I wondered if I might try un installing PSP X 4 and re installing it, might solve the problems.

Thanks in advance.

Try the "Shift key trick" first :-)

Save your workspace if you have changed it in any way.
Close PSPX4.
Open PSPX4 again, whilst holding the Shift key. Don't let go of the Shift key until you see a message that tells you PSP will return to it's default settings.
Click OK.
X4 will reload. This might solve your problem, it' might save uninstalling, which is such a hassle.
:-)

Buy a card reader. 10x faster and no camera interface. If you insist on downloading using the camera use EOS Utility. You can even set that up to download from your camera/card automatically, sort by date taken, rename, create subfolders automatically, etc..... or you can have total and complete control. You can even update the firmware, upload custom picture styles, set the custom functions, live view, control the camera via computer, set the things on the C1, C2, and C3 modes, as well as something I've likely forgotten.

To use a graphics editing program to download via a camera is to ask for problems. You've got the OS to contend with, as well as the camera, and any codecs that want to get in the way.

What format are you trying to save too? If you're trying to save back to CR2 files that may be a problem. If you're trying to save to Tiffs you shouldn't have any crashes.

Thanks for the information, Dan, I appreciate any help that you give me.
I am new at this game as you can probably tell, I am mainly downloading raw files, I did buy a card reader off the good old e-bay, but after a while it stopped working.
I re installed PSP X 4 and it seems to be working fine now, I also use Photoshop ( try to use ), but I find PSP X 4 more user friendly and I think it can do 98% of what is available in Photoshop.
The reason I un installed PSP X 3 is because I thought the two programs might conflict with each other and because I thought having an up to date version of PSP would render the other version obsolete. having read some of the comments on the forum I have re installed PSP X 3.
I will invest in another card reader, because as you have said downloading from the camera is very slow.

Thanks again for your help.

I use a small card reader that takes only SDHC cards, it's the size of a USB key.
They're cheap and do the job well.
I buy mainly from www.7dayshop.com, a brilliant online shop :-)

I have a Canon 450D and used to use the Canon software to download, then I bought the tiny Canon S95, which also shoots RAW, now the software gets confused, so I use the card reader all the time.
I should have done that to start with, it's a lot easier :-)

79% of what Photoshop can do...and that's an exaggeration but most of what Photoshop can do most people don't do.

Joelle, the 40D takes a CF card.
I bought my card reader from Fry's for about $10, maybe less. When looking for a CF card reader make sure you get one that is at least as deep as half the card. Cheaper card readers basically let you just plug the end of the card into it, but with so many pins on a CF card there's a higher chance of bending a pin or damaging the card. Better cards have alignment slots/pins on the sides and make it impossible to get it in there wrong.

http://www.frys.com/product/5657231?sit ... IN_RSLT_PG This is the one I have but there are others out there just as good. I picked mine in the store, wanted to see how the CF card went into the reader.

Aha, silly me, I thought Canon stuck to just one format
Limey77 lives in Malta and might have easier access to UK than to US retailers, but then again, online is anywhere.
I have been eyeing a 7D, unfortunately my bank account doesn't cooperate, so that's where it will remain. I'll check what card that one uses (just out of interest..) :-)
Thanks Dan.

Glad I didn't buy the Canon - went for the Sony instead and PSPX4 works just fine - whereas PSE9 prefers to let the Sony software kick in instead! But regardless I edit in PSP rather than any RAW editor!
If I want a quick fix - PICASA will read RAW but MS won't

I used to have Canon film cameras in the 60s ( bought a Pellix, the first SLR made by Canon, great camera) until digital appeared on my horizon in 1997.
I bought the Sony Mavica, a brick of a camera with terrible image quality!
Then bought Fuji, then a small Sony W1 which was excellent, but too much CA to deal with. Finally moved back to Canon, now I am a very happy camper :-)
I like the idea that you can re-do RAW as often as you like, so am definitely hooked on RAW.
Then adjusting in PSP of course.
It's a great addiction :-)

Everything is working fine now, but as Dan has said downloading from the camera is very slow, so I have sent for a new card a
LEXAR USB 3.0 MEMORY CARD READER COMPACT FLASH AND SDHC.
It is supposed to be very fast, so hopefully it will improve my downloads.
I agree with you Joelle, I rate canon as one of the best camera's on the market, their lens quality is second to none.
The 7D takes CF, I hope your bank balance lets you get one someday, I also have a Canon 5D MKII a superb machine.
