lovin psp x4,

but...

Alpha tools

1: when saving a file with only one alpha channel, the Active alpha channel should be the one saved not the first in the list

2: the ability to delete alphas from the list

3: saving alphas has become a pain in the ***

4: copy & paste used to be fine

and more alpha tools you can think of ;)

You can delete them. They've just moved the Delete option to the Image menu instead of the Selections menu where it used to be. You can move it back to the Selections menu, if you like.

I've been using PSPx4 about 45 days. Here is the list of things that would enhance my experience and PSP's functionality.

1) Set X,Y position (center or origin) and scale of all tabbed images to same as the current image. Text entry X,Y would be nice as well, maybe on the overview palette? Overview palette helps sometimes but I'm spending a lot of time panning around in several images to get to the same position in all of them. And I want the same exact position, not the general area.

2) Global and local tabbed image tool selection. A checkbox or radio buttons on every tabbed image to use a globally applicable tool and settings or a local tool. Many times, I need to do the same thing on each tabbed image, this would be much more productive than having to individually select the same tool and set it up over and over again. I suppose there should be a preference to open new images with the global or local tool, local being the default.

3) Should be able to turn off thumbnail images in output files. Currently, I have to spend time removing those from the images outside of PSP. I don't care if this makes Windows slower or the thumbnail shown by certain Windows directory views is not as accurate.

4) Should be able to import vector data into a vector layer, not only render it as image data. SVG, PDF, etc.

I have been a Bibble user for five years and like the functionality and, at least with Bibble4, the speed with which new cameras were added - ability to handle Nikon d800 soon would allow me to process my D800 pictures. I also see the main competion as Lightroom4. Lightroom4 has added the ability to handle (minimally) vidoes. Hopefully both these will be available in the near future

Hi,
I haven't read all of the wish list so I don't know if this is on there. I would like to be able to apply the Topaz plugins to RAW files. Or is there a way that I don't know about?
Thanks,
Dwight

Here's another :

1) I've noticed that in some cases PSP will not overwrite the original image and in others it will. This is logically inconsistent. If I can change in the image in SOME way that allows me to overwrite my original image file then I should be able to overwrite in if I change the image in ANY way.

The specific case where I was prevented from saving my image I had changed a TIFF tbit/pixel image to RGB 8 bit/channel. This just caused me extra work; I had to delete the old images and rename the new outside of PSP. This just means another potential point of user error. When I ask for something to be done, I expect the program to do it unless there is a fundamental problem completing the operation.

If you want to prevent data loss under an out of space condition, the right way to do that is to first write the new image with a temporary file name (now you've allocated the space on the filesystem), then remove the old file and rename the temporary file to the old file name. Most OS's don't even need the remove, because the rename does not care if the target file name exists; as a bonus the rename is atomic as well. If you are truly paranoid you could also rename the old image file to a second temporary file name and remove it after you know the new image safely has the original file name, but I hardly think that will be necessary.

Hi Everybody,
As usual, here are my big wishes -- maybe for Christmas 2014.
1. Lab color mode. At least include "Smart Curves" as a plug in.
2. A decent Curves dialog. I like the one in Corel PhotoPaint. It's superior to Curves in PhotoShop.
3. An interactive gradient tool like the ones in PhotoPaint and PhotoShop for painting on a layer mask. Compositing images in PSP is like stabbing in the dark.
4. It's no big deal, but the layer mask belongs below the layer that it controls. It's like a sheet of glass whose transparency controls how much of the image on top you see and how much transmits through from the other side.
Given (3) and (4) makes me wonder if anyone uses PSP to composite photos. (Montages which do not use a layer mask don't count for this.)

Phil, I use layer masks all the time. It is time consuming and anything that can be done to speed it up and move it along would be greatly appreciated.

Phil,

I like interactive Gradient tool, X5 beta has a graduate effect, but that is a like a effect, not work for me at all.

I use "selection" to composite photo a lot, select part I want, promote to new layer, or copy to other image. What is item 4 about? seems the way that mask works in X4 now. I edit mask layer a lot, PSPneed to improve those mask editing (feathering, expand, matting, ... ).

My #1 WISH for future PSP:

The retoushing bruch should show a preview of how the selected area would look like after applying the brush!
By just hovering the mouse over the image, in the circle of the brush one would already see the possible change. When clicking the mouse the change is actually effected.
