That is strange behavior indeed. We are both seeing the same issue but under different circumstances. I only see the issue when copying & pasting from PSE9 into X4. I do not see the issue when copying & pasting from another photo editor (X2, X3, Paint.NET, etc.) into X4. I also do not see the issue when I copy & paste from Google Images or a message board into X4.

I've reported what I'm seeing and I hope you have reported the issue too as what you are seeing is more severe. Also, the more people who report it, the better because if they think it is only one user, they will put it on the bottom of the pile in terms of fixes.

I generally skip a version so - having skipped X3 - it was time to buy an upgrade. Fairly happy so far. The much greater range of 16-bit tool support is very welcome. Radim's comment about the Layer Styles dialog is true though - there is still no numeric input for Layer Styles, which has been a problem since it was first added, in X2 I believe.

Apparent bug in toolbar customization. If you select a command to add to your toolbar and the command does not have an image of its own you're supposed to be able to supply one. You can infact right click the newly added text-version of the command in your toolbar and select Image. That switches the display mode of the command to Image (from a choice of Image, Text, Image&Text) but the part of the dialog that allows you to actually select an image remains grayed out and disabled. When you click OK, it actually warns you that you haven't selected an image even though there's no way to do so.

On the ever changing Organizer function, does anyone know how I can get a grid-of-thumbnails view back? With large stock collections I don't find a single long narrow strip to be a particularly useful way of browsing.

Must have started with X3 because X2 has all the usual controls for layers. There are three choices: enter numbers manually, use the up/down arrows, or use the horizontal slider.

Gah, really? They wrote a new interface for X3 then took it back out again in X4? Now I'm even more miffed about the interface in X4. Here are the Layer Styles interfaces from both X2 and X4:

Image

As you can see, there are no numeric input fields, no spin controls, nothing. Just sliders and that awful stick-a-pin-in-a-circle thing in the middle. The interface in place in X2 and X4 does not provide any way to consistently apply the same Layer Style properties to multiple images because using sliders/stick-a-pin controls is imprecise. A number field or a spin control would allow the user to apply the exact same effect to multiple images by simply entering the same number.

Can you post a screenshot of the same part of the X3 interface so that I can see the numeric entry fields on Layer Styles. Corel are crazy if they've taken the feature out in X4 after putting it in in X3.

@ allicorn - I'm seeing the same thing as you in X2 Ultimate. Maybe LindeSue was referring to adjustment layers and not the layer styles that you mentioned?

Just to add to the discussion and maybe get some answers.
I am a long time PSP/JASC user (probably back to ver 3 or 4 of JASC), I have always loved this program even through the many glitches and essentially worthless upgrades. I got PSPx4 (Photo & Video) installed yesterday and spent much of the evening playing with it. I've never liked the graphite colored interface and was disappointed I couldn't change it, maybe they'll fix that.
More pressing to me is I can't figure out how to change the every opened file is in its own TAB, instead of a separate window in the workspace. What's with that? I work with sometimes 20-25 images open at one, resize them so I can see them all, now that is apparently no longer possible. Am I wrong?
Also I'm used to right clicking the layer (in the layer palette) and using arrange from the drop down, it doesn't appear any longer?
I also am used to a much smaller Materials palette, haven't figured out, can't remember how I got it smaller in X3... any hints? I want the color chart and the f/b color swatch side-by-side, not top-to-bottom.
I'm sure there are other issues as I do more work.
Thanks for any help...

In X3 Ultimate, I see the same thing as your two examples for X2 and X4.

I have only begun putting it through its paces.

Thanks for the clarifications. Looks like it really has remained unchanged for 3 versions. I think LindaSue was thinking of some other part of the interface there.

The Selective Focus effect is hilarious. What fun!

Quite liking the Dual Monitor button too. I'd really really like to get a better way to browse images than that single row narrow strip in the Organizer though. Did they really remove the grid-of-thumbnails view completely? Seems a bit bonkers to me. I can see myself having to use external thumbnail browsing software because PSP is missing that feature.

New icon images are okay. All very gray though. A touch of color here and there helps differentiate between great swathes of tiny icons, making it quicker to home in on the one you want, I reckon.

The new quick startup is very quick, like a second or so but I can't actually start interacting with the program until it finishes apparently doing something with the Organizer database I guess. If I have the Navigation pane of the Organizer open, I can watch about 5 to 10 seconds of the vertical scrollbar wildly slinging up and down and changing length. While this is in progress, the mouse cursor is still on full hourglass mode and I can't interact with the interface. Anyone know what that's doing there and if there's a way to stop it?

Another customization limitation (I'm rather big on setting things up the way I like it). Although you can customize context menus, you can't customize the one in the Organizer view. I would have liked to have been able to remove "Adjust Image" and set things up so that a doubleclick on an image in the organizer opens it in Edit view. Why would I want to go to another preview interface when I'm already in a preview interface? Curious.

You're right. I wasn't looking under the Layer Styles tab. I never even noticed that was there. I thought you all were talking about the regular Layer Properties and Adjustment Layer dialogs. Is any of that stuff under Styles useful? It seems like most of that stuff can be done some other way.

It's pretty handy stuff, but just really needs some number fields or such to make it something that one can use in a consistent way. What it allows you to do is to say things like "this layer has a drop shadow" and then go work on the layer contents. As you change stuff on the layer, the drop shadow automatically updates. Or glowy edge effects, bevels, that kind of thing. It's genuinely neat, if only they'd put just a smidge more work into it.

I personally only use the layer styles at the end of a piece I'm working on. Depending on the size of the image it takes long enough to update that I turn off layer styles when working on the contents and turn them back on to preview the end result.

Currently the best way to get the exact same results every-time is to either save a pre-set (removing any unnecessary settings) or to nudge the sliders with the arrow keys (Technically only have 50 values to choose from if you start at either end). Or do what I do and make a script, sure it can't read the current layer styles but it can give you the ability to set values manually.
