Re: PaintShop Pro X4
Thank you for the information. And I am duly grateful that PSP X4 will not corrupt my workspace. But that does not feel like an enhancement somehow...
As to the $29.99 bargain price, I don't know yet if there will be any benefits: I upgraded because PSP X3 crashed again today, and no X3 problems will be fixed now. So I dutifully got the latest version. I am not aware of any new functionality I will use. Perhaps I will be pleasantly surprised.
The only thing I got from X3 (from X) was better performance and reliability with larger files: no new functionality that I use, and X3 still crashed often enough to annoy when applying effects, etc.
It may be the artist vs photographer issue: I don't need or use many photo editing & management functions. I think Corel has a different user base in mind, so I am looking about for new software.

Re: PaintShop Pro X4
OK, I am still harping on X4, and the loss of my customizations / preferences:
Do I have to retrain X4 to find my brushes, patterns, picture tubes, etc. one folder at a time? Or can I add a directory tree with all my older PSP custom saved files to the default paths?
And then there are color management preferences, file format optimization preferences, etc. all lost?
And now I can't see any of my image file thumbnails with X4 when I open files!! What is this with Corel & PSP and Windows icon/thumbnails? I just reinstalled (again) that klugey add-on to see my image thumbnails for X3 recently (on Windows 7 Home), but X4 does not show the image thumbnails: this is just so really ugly!
PSP still has the most bang for the buck, with painting, photo editing, vector graphics, etc. BUT too many old problems are not being addressed: klunky print layout issues and bugs, the thumbnails, etc. There are lists of old problems, important items that got taken away, etc. Please fix these!
I won't complain at all about the next $40 upgrade IF I get back the ability to enter coordinates for crop and select rectangles, AND see my thumbnails AND retain my customization profile AND have a light/neutral workspace option!

Thinking about taking the X4 plunge ...
One of my problems with X3 is it holding up so much memory. Can anyone comment on X4's release of memory compared to X3?
Thanks!

Re: PaintShop Pro X4
X4 has a scratch disk like Photoshop. When I tested PSPX4 with a batch of files with a script that was CPU intensive it was less prone to crash, but I think I still got a crash here and there of regular use. I just bought the box version and my trial ran out a while ago so can't test it for specifics until I get my activation code in the mail. But I've rarely had an issue with X3, so maybe it's a moot point. I used http://www.majorgeeks.com/CleanMem_d5993.html and most of my issues went away. However it was not a regular occurrence for me to begin with so I'm not particularly a good judge of if it's doing it's job.
At any rate, PSPX4 and X4 Ultimate are both the same price right now to upgrade, $30. But according to the website it's today only so if you do it now would be a good time. The Nik Color Effects 3.0 that the Ultimate comes with sells for $100 more if you're into that stuff.

Re: PaintShop Pro X4
the CleanMem does work and X4 is less greedy than X3 but still hogs even after CleanMem is running - most of the problem is 16bit. If you're going to do layers and big files then go down to 8bit - I've done some comparisons - and PSPX4 is nearly as fast as Elements 10 (which is 8bit only) - you'll only really see a difference in the image in large expanses of one single tonedf wrote:X4 has a scratch disk like Photoshop. The NIK filters - the reason for the inclusion in the bundle is simple - Color Efex 4 is the latest release!!!!!!! so Corel got it cheap

Re: PaintShop Pro X4
Hi, All,
I joined this board after having just installed PSP X4. I had been running PSPP X3. My wife is running PSP 9 on her old XP and is quite happy with it, thank you very much.
Anyway, the reason I am writing (and I DON'T know if this is the correct forum) is that when I installed PSPP X3 Ultimate, I ended up with a plethora of custom brushes, bump maps, textures, et cetera, that came with the program as ZIP files. When I installed PSP X4 Ultimate, ALL of those custom things disappeared! I couldn't believe it at first, so I ran PSPP X3 and looked for various files with which I had been experimenting. PSPP X3 couldn't find them. I went to the folder where I had installed all of these extra files, and all of the folders were there ... completely empty!
This leads to my question: does anyone know how I can retrieve and restore just those (brushes, maps, swatches, textures, picture tubes, etc.) files that went missing during the install/upgrade from PSPP X3 to PSP X4? Can I reinstall PSPP X3 and selectively install just those files? Or must I reinstall all of PSPP X3? And if I reinstall all of PSPP X3, will that negatively affect PSP X4?
I apologize if this is the wrong place for this post, and I apologize if this question has been posted elsewhere, but, as I said, I am new to this board, and I am just poking my way around trying to learn things about PSP X4.
Thanks,
Robert

Terry, thanks. I realize that; however, somehow -- and I surely don't know how -- all of my custom stuff disappeared from PSPPX3 subsequent to the installation of PSPX4. I did not think it could or should happen, but it did happen, and I am at a loss as to how to retrieve the missing information.Robert

Re: PaintShop Pro X4
I did a download trial of x4 @ work, and bought the box copy. I have it on an XP Dell Lattitude E6400 laptop. While using the laptop away from internet, I discovered it requires me to be w/ internet access for X4 to load. I uninstalled and re-installed the box copy, still requires online access for it to load up and run. Otherwise it just ignores loading.
Further, I have another perfectly OK copy of X4 @ home on a win7 home prem 64 bit Gateway desktop AMD 6 core pc. And it does NOT require internet for it to load. Any ideas?

Never. They will fix quite a few and those depend on what they are working on and how long it takes to develop the bug-fixes it's not a fixed schedule. But in the end not all of the bugs will be fixed in X4 before X5 comes out and even then they are not guaranteed to be fixed.
It's the nature of software.

Re: PaintShop Pro X4
Actually unfortunately I am under the same impression:
psp 10 and 11 were just to make money.
X2 was nice with floating organizer workspace and thumbnail view.
In X3 all the nice floating stuff had been canceled and the "Smart Photo Fix" crashed all the time.
In X4 you can at least input text in several different languages into photos without having to change system locale and restart your computer for each language, the floating stuff is here again, but too many really annoying bugs like disappearing icons, changing cascaded view into tabbed view when using "Crop", one of the main tools used, etc.
The service guys are friendly, but are closing cases without having solved anything.
So at the moment I 'll keep on using it to put text into photos. At least I don't need to use Photoshop anymore for that.
