PaintShop Pro X4

Post by wds937 »

PaintShop Pro X4 is out: http://www.corel.com/servlet/Satellite/ ... bview=tab0

That's PaintShop Pro (no "Photo").

Right out of the gate, it is available in both regular and Ultimate. I think I'll wait a bit.

Looks like they have some new stuff. They also have old stuff that they are saying is new like Selective Focus and Picture Tubes. Really? Touting the old as if it were new is getting old.

Selective focus is new unless we had it originally and lost it and now it is back. It is not new to the digital world but to PSP.

And I can confidently say text editing is better, not great but better than X3.

Also I don't think they are touting the picture tubes as new rather you get more if you go ultimate....which I am not seeing a benefit to going ultimate. I suppose Nix filters are nice but I don't know what version they are on or what the normal price is to see if X4 ultimate would be worth those extra.plugins alone.

Is Selective Focus in X4 different than Depth Of Field in X3? (Under Adjust between Hue/Saturation and Add/Remove Noise)

Yes it is, selective focus and vignette are two new effects and are found under the effects menu.

Selective Focus is a specific effect to give an image sort of miniature model kind of look. It's actually not half bad. Give it a try and see if you like it. It also has the same name as the actual effect so you can Google examples if you want a good idea of how it is used.

I am still going to use PhotoFuze in Windows Live Photo Gallery because I hate the PhotoBlend feature that comes with PSPX4 though. Try it yourself but I think most will agree with me on that one.

No, 16-bit support still isn't program wide but they have increased the number of tools that are. For example, the clone brush which personally was one I wanted. But History adjustment still wants it to be 8-bit.

I also like the scratch disk feature. Sure it's something that should have existed a while ago but it has helped some to keep me from running into memory problems.

I have no experience with the Nik filters, but the product listed on their website looks to be the same as the one described for PSP X4 Ultimate: http://www.niksoftware.com/store/usa/en ... mily.shtml. If that's the case, then this may be a good value if the filters are useful.

I noticed on the Nik website there is no mention of PSP as a supported host application. So, I suppose this is another specially-packaged plugin version, as was the case for PhotoLooks in X3 Ultimate.

This should be a free upgrade for anyone who bought PSPPX3. But when LeviFiction says it's a good release, then I will consider an upgrade. :D

Is there a recommended procedure if upgrading from X3 Ultimate?
I'm wondering if X3 should be uninstalled prior to installing X4, or will X4 "replace" X3, etc?

The upgrade is just for the pricing... you can actually install PSP X3 and PSP X4 at the same time on the same computer.

Thank you for the quick reply, Abiel.
I just purchased X4 - looking forward to installing and using it (except for being torn between my job, my wife, and X4  )
