Why do people like to capture in DV(AVI) format rather than MPEG2? I came across a lot of threads in this forum concerning problems with AVI format. Honestly I don't use MF4 for capturing. I have a Pinnacle AV/DV capture card & bundled with Pinnacle Studio 8.7. When the program open, a graphic pic of a DV cam is there with all the functions & counter. I can start & stop by clicking the onscreen buttons & the preview is in sync with the DV screen. I always capture in MPEG2 & with auto scene detection, I can do my editing in the same program. Then I will import into MF4 for the authoring.
Today I tried capturing in MF4 & I don't like it at all esp the preview is very jerky & out of sync with the DV screen but the captured file looks & sounds OK. Can I edit MPEG2 in MF4? I can't do it at all. I tried importing into VideoStudio 8 & Studio 8 but it cannot be opened. Probably I am not used to this program yet.
Ideal Format for Capturing?

I would stay with the Pinnacle hardware card and software that's
written to support it to capture and edit.
then use MF4 to create chapters, menu's and burn.
If the video is dvd compliant is will not be re-rendered when creating the dvd.
That's what you want to do. There is a setting for that under the Gear icon.

personally I use the winfast software to capture using the hardware encoder to mpeg2. A lot of people cap to DV or huffyuv because it gives them the best quality to then import to edit etc.
personally I find hardware mpeg encoding at a high bitrate to be fine, then i either burn with mf4 or maybe mess about and edit etc. before burning.
