Insert Media Files

Post by stevehartwell »

Could have been the very best software I've seen in 20 years, especially for the price. I was really excited about buying it. Except for one thing. We take photos and videos on multiple cameras. Usually there are 100s, often even over 1,000-2,000+ files. We need editing software that allows batch inserting by Date/Time with both photos and videos in their proper date/time recorded sequence. In the Library window, there is NO WAY to batch 'Insert Media Files' all photo/video files from multiple cameras taken of a single event/trip by DATE/Time in their proper original date/time sequence. Oh sure, there is a 'Sort by Date' afterwards, BUT, Video Studio date-lists all the Photos first and THEN all the videos. So when you batch insert all your files to track, all your video clips get inserted AFTER all the photos instead of where they belong by date/time taken In Proper Sequence WITH the photos. - 'File/Insert Digital Media' is even worse than that. STUPID Software is useless for our needs because of that one little screwed up aspect.

Here is how I do this. In Windows Explorer, place all the media sorted in the way you want it; this can be done either by renaming files, or if accurate, sorting by date created, date taken, etc. Once the folder has all the media, photos and video clips, in the order you want it select all of them, and with the cursor on the first one, click left mouse button and drag and drop on the VS timeline. The media files will be in the order that they are in the folder selection... Al

BTW, before speaking badly about a program because there is something you can't do, you should ask if there is a way to do what you want to do. Now you look a little foolish with your post.

I know a thing or 2 about Digital Photographing and Digital Video'ing. I've been DP'ing and DV'ing since 1997, beginning with the Corel Lumiere DV editor and the first Sony Pro-sumer Digital Camera - about the size of a woman's purse  . I have been scanning GIF, JPG, BMP, etc since 1985.  I've assembled and upgraded all my PCs since 1989. I transfer old films, slides, etc to DVD for people, http://www.homemovies.ca, I've used a lot of software programs over these years, including my most recent version of Premiere CS 4.2,

In the same price range as Video Studio Pro X4 I've got Roxio Creator Pro and Pinnacle Studio Ultimate sitting in the closet, Nero 10 which I use for other needs -- none of which can do the insert job I need, including Premiere.

There is just one I have ever found. Total Media Extreme II by ArcSoft.

But I would much rather use Corel VS, if only........

I still use Corel Draw 8 and Wordperfect 2000 often. They are still good useful programs to me. I really wanted Corel Video Studio to do what I need it to do, because, Corel is still sorta Canadian, and I always use Canadian whenever possible, which I'm very sad to say, is very rare to find, and getting more so.

And, yes, I thought of asking nicely first, I almost did, but, I thoroughly investigated the Video Studio program before posting.

Video Studio does - not - do the job I need it to do, and, I'm 61, from long experience I know I'll not live long enough for them to change it, or be too old to care if they do before I dust off, so I won't be back to check it out nor post here ever again, so, why bother pretending I'm not extremely disappointed - and feeling anger that I could not hide.

If I appeared foolish to post angry criticism without first asking - nor after being told what I already know - politely ask me if I care.....

FYI,

Only Photos have Date Taken, - Video Clips do Not have that info. Why the powers that be did not long ago assign Date Taken to Video Clips too, boggles my mind. A very foolish thing not to have done.

As stated, neither Date Taken nor Date Modified do not change the fact that Video Studio then batch inserts photos first and video clips after photos. Why do that ??? "It does NOT compute !"

From just 2006 thru to last weekend I have 209GB of 29,662 photo and video clip files from various cameras in 375 folders on my ext 1T drive alone. Total backed up somewhere - probably 4 times that.

Umm, I'm 61 years old. I haven't enough years left to re-name my 120,000+ photos and video clips nor insert the video clips one at a time where they belong as you suggest :-(

foolish suggestion imho -

And it's Video Studio X4 that is looking foolish too. I'm not the only one with 10s of thousands of DP and DV. All editor makers should have figured out a long time ago to add the choice to properly insert/import/integrate large numbers of photos and video clips in related sequence taken.

I would much rather use Corel VS, if only........

bye

I will do one last attempt at "helping" you do this. You are obviously not willing to read and try to make it work for you. BTW I am 67 years old, so you being 61 is not that impressive.

1) Place all your media in one folder.

2) Make sure the media is listed in that folder in the order that you want it to appear in your video story. This means you must have the photos AND the video clips in order. This is your problem. Either use Date modified, date created, or any other way to get them close to the way you want them. Then the video clips need some work; rename them so they end up in the correct place, or use one of the "date" sorts, like date modified.

3) Now select them all and with the cursor in the first item, drag and drop on the VS timeline. VS will insert all the media in the order they are listed in the folder. VS does not insert the photos first and then the video clips. VS inserts them in the order they are selected.

I really don't care what you write next. I will not reply as this is as far as I can go to help you. I realize you are 61 years old (you said it twice in your post) and perhaps you don't want to learn any more?
