VS9 Capture from DVD

Post by arjblackburn »

Dear VS9 Users,

I am a newbie to VS - my first attempt at using was to capture some stuff that had been recorded onto DVD. The video imported fine, but although there was a sound icon on the thumbnail when I dragged and dropped onto the timeline, there was no sound and I can't for the life of me figure out how to make it play.

2 things noted.

Firstly, the sound is Dolby digital - is there a specific problem with this?

Second, when I go to the audio tab, there does not seem to be any time associated with the sound track, even though it appears to be on the music overlay.

Many thanks for your help,

Andrew

After you imported the video it should appear on the timeline.
Right click on the icon on the TIMELINE and select properties.

What are the properties of the video file, especially the audio.
Does your version of VS9 support Dolby audio?
If not you can purchase the dolby audio add-on for approx $30.00 from
the ulead web-site.

If this is a non-SE version of UVS 9, it should include the AC-3 codec -- you can check if it does by selecting Product Codec Information from the Tools menu. If the "Dolby Digital" codec is shown, you should be able to import AC3 audio from a DVD.

The problem may simply be the playback using an external media player, such as Windows Media Player. If that's the case, you need something like the AC3 DirectShow Filter.

guys,

Many thanks for your help - unfortunately still not resolved!

- I have the full version of VS9 so should support Dolby
- I can see a small speaker icon on the video clip on the timeline to suggest that it has embedded sound - when I click properties it tells me that it has Dolby digital sound.
- A further thing I have noticed - when I look in the root of the DVD there is Video_TS and Video_RM (no Audio_TS). Does this have any significance?

Best regards,

Andrew

I believe that is a DVD recorded in the +VR format .

The audio properties should say 2/0 correct?

Since you imported the file onto the harddisk I would try to play
the video using WinDvd or PowerDvd to make sure it has the
correct audio in it.
I've seen recorders set to record the SAP channel. If there isn't
a SAP channel being broadcast there is an audio track on
the dvd but it's silent (No modulation).

Make sure all the audio mixer settings are correct and not muted.

Another method is to "Right-Click" on the video and select "Split-Audio"
Then goto Share -> create audio track and export the audio as a wav
file. Try to play that wav file in another program or load it into an audio
editor and make sure you can see the waveform.

MF4 had that problem with the Dolby audio not playing correctly but I
haven't heard of VS9 causing this.
I have a recorder that records "MAIN/SAP & Subtitles"

Hope this helps,

Hi MD,

I tried what you suggested - but still no sound!

This is what it says when I click "properties" on the clip after it has been captured:

Audio: Dolby Digital Audio
Total Samples: 174,113,280 Samples
Attributes: 48000Hz 2/0(L/R)
Layer: None
Bit Rate: 256kbps

Any the wiser?

Yours,

Andrew

Did you try the AC3 DirectShow Filter as mentioned in my earlier message?

Did you export the audio to a wav file and play the wav file
in another application or view the waveform?
Can you play the video in another application? The video is on the
harddisk because you imported it. It should reside under the directory
that you assigned as the "Working Folder".

Maybe start a new project and import the video in seperately
from the harddrive.

Step 2. Import another dvd from the recorder.
