Video Studio Pro 4 – 3D – Re Doing Previous DVD File

Post by kevsim »

With the 3D option now in Video Studio Pro 4, I would appreciate some advise on the following –
1/ Can an older DVD be re-rendered as DVD 3D Anaglypt file?
2/ What type of glasses are required to watch the movie, there are many types and colours on the web?
3/ Will it play from a standard DVD player to standard LCD TV?
4/ If so, what is the quality of the output movie?
5/ Does it look realistic 3D?

Yes, as long as you have a good quality of the video from the DVD.

2/ What type of glasses are required to watch the movie, there are many types and colours on the web?
Anaglyph — Requires only the red and blue generic anaglyph 3D glasses to view 3D video without the need for special display monitors. I'm not sure about the actual technical specs of the glass.

3/ Will it play from a standard DVD player to standard LCD TV?
I have not tried burning the 3D Mpeg that created but if you are able to create an "3D" MPEG file then you should be able to create a DVD using that 3D Mpeg file.

4/ If so, what is the quality of the output movie?
As a mpeg file yes (up to 1080p) not sure when you create the DVD,

5/ Does it look realistic 3D?
I guess this will be answered when you experience or watched the exported 3D video yourself.

Ken Berry,
Thank you for your reply and apologize in the late response.
As I do not have any anaglyph glasses and could not purchase locally, I have ordered a few pair from overseas, delivery is not until months end or a little later.
I have made a few short videos in 3D, but when looking at them without glasses they look no different from other videos.

For 3D, is there any special file format or procedure to follow?
I would appreciate your advice.

When I tested out the 3D function, I used a variety of video formats: mpeg-2, AVCHD, HDV. I cannot say I was particularly impressed with the end result using the glasses supplied with the boxed edition of X4. Nevertheless, there was a very distinct 3D effect on all of them -- though accompanied, I thought, with some red and greenish-blue ghosting effects. It was the latter which made me think the whole effort was really probably not worth it. But 3D it was.

And the video clips processed with 3D looked to me at least quite different from the originals. They too appeared to have two edges: a stronger one and a more ghostly one. But again, I thought that this was how it should appear. Since that time, though, I have done no further experimentation. So hopefully someone else who has more experience with 3D might answer here.

The 3D videos will have the two color separation, Magenta and Cyan (red/blue). It will appear as Ken stated having a ghosting. The 3D is an illusion, where the colors are used to fool the eyes into thinking it is real 3D. That's why the need for the special glasses. Each eye picks up the color, dictated by the lens color.

You could actually do something similar manually, using a photo. Just copy it, reduce the opacity, move it over and down or up by 10 or so pixels. Add the proper color hues, Left=red, Blue=right. View it through the special glasses and it appears 3D. Notice I said similar. It would be very difficult to get the exact same result manually as the program. There's more complexity involving the proper color separations, yet having the correct color for the finished combined result.

I now have some 3D Red/Blue glasses and can test the Anaglyph videos.
The videos I rendered in Video Studio do not look anything like a 3d video when looking at them the with no glasses.
I put on the glasses and it looks like an ordinary video just darker.

I thought it may have been my computer equipment so tried DVD Fab 8, it has many choices for 3d, I tried Anaglyph Red/Blue, the result when finished looked like a 3d movie when not wearing glasses and with glasses was reasonable.

What could I be doing wrong in Video Studio that my renders do not come out in 3d?

I would appreciate some advise.

I have now upgraded my Video Card drivers but I am still having the problem of the 3d output file being just an ordinary file.
The out put formats have been DVD, MP4, WMV and all come out the same.
I tried outputs in Blueray formats but this is just the same.
My Computer is running Windows XP Pro, is the 3D meant to work on this operating system.
Anybody have any ideas if I could be missing something.

I have used DVD FAB 8 and there is not a problem, but to do it that way I first have to make the video then convert it, so much time lost.
