Switchable subtitles

Post by breadman »

I previously posted this wrongly in the tutorials section - under 'Create Subtitles with VS11+ for use in MF6+ (Video)'
I use VideoStudio Pro X2 and would like to add switchable subtitles, just to be able to switch them on and off with the DVD remote control. Would I need to buy MovieFactory? Does it still exist for UK customers? Is there any cheaper option? Do later versions of VideoStudio incorporate switchable subtitles?
Thanks all

I recall reading your post there, and in fact ran some tests, checking myself. However I must have got sidetracked, because I didn't post a reply.

It does take using DVD MovieFactory to make that happen. Corel just didn't put that option in the burn modules integrated with VS, even though it's patterned off of DVD MF.

You can also use VS X4 to create multiple subtitles.. You can use the video overlay tracks for more titles and use the titles function to create the title and load the subtitle file, just create more on the video.

But Abiel, they cannot AFAIK be switched on and off by remote control -- which is what the OP is wanting.

OK so I would need Movie Factory 6. I found it on CNET and downloaded it - a TBYB version. But it was unusable as it immediately said it had 0 days left. The 'buy it now' link was to the US site and it invited UK customers to visit the UK site but there was no sign of DMF there.
But if I did download it from the US site and pay the dollars or found it elsewhere, does it work on Windows 7?
Thank you

The version currently available is MF 7 Pro. Note that it came out well before Win 7 but works with it. The problem was that it was originally only made available in a couple of areas of the world, and North America and Europe were not amongst them, believe it or not. Corel apparently had decided at the time to drop the product. But in the event, with the awful mess they made with the burning module in X3, they produced a cut down version of MF 7 and instead of Pro, they called it SE (Special Edition). It was made available free to registered users of X3. But frankly, I have no idea if the SE version will do what you want.

In fact, I don't even know if the Pro version will do it -- I have never had the need for sub-titles. But it certainly now seems to be back in the land of the living on the Corel website: http://www.corel.com/servlet/Satellite/ ... bview=tab0 Hopefully that should still open wherever you are in the world. If not, look at the Corel.com website, click on the All Products button, and then in the dropdown select Video & DVD > DVD Authoring & Burning where it should be listed. You can download a trial version.

Thank you for your detailed reply.
I tried your link - When I changed it from NZ to UK DMF disappeared.
Anyway, I found the trial version of DMF7 on corel.com and downloaded it. Almost identical installation process as the DMF6 I tried before but this time it has its full 30 days, so I can have a play with it. But just for adding the occasional subtitle I would really be looking for a cheaper alternative.
Thanks for all your help

I don't know anything about any of these, but they do fit into the category of DVD menu editing, and cheaper.. ;)

PgcEdit
Dimad Soft MenuEdit
Subtitle Workshop
DVD SubEdit

Thank you for that - yes I have tried several freeware subtitling programs - I'll try these as well. They are usually not switchable though.
Many thanks for your suggestions
