I just started using the new x4 version of VS and I noticed the playback on the preview window is very choppy. I have Pinnacle Studio HD, Sony Vegas Pro & of course Premiere CS5 installed to compare between them all, and don't have that problem, even with effects or anything added. Is there an option somewhere I'm missing? I've tried different video types and it doesn't seem to matter. The main one I'm trying is a 1280x720 AVI file I recorded.
Checked and unchecked the "Hardware Acceleration" ticks, no difference either way.
Checked DirectX....up to date.
Checked graphics drivers...up to date.
Is there anything to do about this?
I appreciate it.
Choppy preview playback?

Well my first instinct is to say if you can afford Premiere and that is working fine, there is no reason to try the rest, it is head and shoulders above your other apps in what it can do.

Re: Choppy preview playback?
Well they are all trials. I'm just trying to compare them, and a good tech friend of mine recommended VS x4. I've been using Pinnacle for several years now. I can get Premiere, but if I can accomplish the same things in VS, then why spend the extra money? It's just for personal use, nothing professional.

Re: Choppy preview playback?
I enabled that and tried the different settings with that and it seemed to make it worse. >,<
EDIT: Smart Proxy did help, but apparently I have to wait for it to render the video ahead of where I'm at? Like buffer it in a sense? If so, it should have a little progress bar so you know where it's at. It is a bit frustrating when scrubbing and it only shows a few frames for about 15 seconds of video.

Re: Choppy preview playback?
You have to let SmartProxy process the whole original file first before attempting to edit. It makes a copy of the video, but using a smaller and easily editable format. Unfortunately, it take time to do this. But once it is done, you can then edit the copies ('proxy files'), and when you are done, all edits are then applied to the originals.

Re: Choppy preview playback?
When was this Ultimate Bonus Pack released? This is the first I have heard of it!! And yes, the extra plug-ins -- especially Boris -- are a valuable edition. Wish I had known this was on the cards... But I don't feel like paying the full upgrade price to get them!
