"Crop to Selection" creates new image???

"Crop to Selection" creates new image???
Suddenly today when I use the "Section tool" on a photo and then 'Crop to Selection' a new image is produced of the cropped selection and the old image remains. I don't want this and it has never happened before in the years I have been using PSP.
I want the existing image to be cropped and then I will save it.
Can anyone tell me how I can reset the "Selection tool' to do what it has always done? BTW I had earlier today used the "Crop" tool and ever since the 'Selection tool' has been creating a new image.
Thanks! Diane

I don't recall the selection tool having a settings that you can adjust or modify, anyway, you can try resetting all of your PSP X3 settings by resetting your workspace.
You can do that by pressing and holding down the SHIFT key then double-click on the PSP icon then when you received the message "DO YOU WAN TO RESTORE PAINTSHOP Pro TO ITS DEFAULT STATE?" just click OK.
NOTE: All changes that you have prior to the reset work space will be lost.

Re: "Crop to Selection" creates new image???
Diane, you don't say which version of PSP you're using but I've discovered something strange in PSPX2 after reading your post. Crop to Selection was working fine for me until I started to play around with the Crop Tool settings. Then all of a sudden the same thing was happening to me. If I applied a Crop to Selection it would create a new image just like it's doing for you. It seems to be a glitch caused by the Crop Tool. I don't normally have the Floating Toolbar enabled for my Crop Tool and the problem seemed to start once I turned it on and used the Crop as New Image option on that toolbar. After playing around with turning off that toolbar and doing a normal crop of an image, Crop to Selection went back to working like it should. So, I suggest that you try turning off that floating toolbar and/or do a regular crop (not Crop as New Image) once or twice and see if it clears out the glitch. It seems to work for me. I can recreate the glitch repeatedly and I can also get it to stop by doing what I suggested.
I almost forgot to mention that to turn off the Crop Tool toolbar, go to General Program Preferences then Transparency and Shading. Uncheck "Enable Floating Crop Toolbar". I suspect though that the problem is caused by using "Crop as New Image" rather than the toolbar itself. Crop as New Image is still available on the Tool Options Palette if you do turn off the crop toolbar.

Re: "Crop to Selection" creates new image???
After doing some more experimenting, it seems that I have to apply a normal crop twice in order to get rid of the glitch. It also looks like I have to do a Crop as New Image twice to make the glitch come back. The floating crop toolbar has nothing to do with the problem.

Re: "Crop to Selection" creates new image???
Thank you for your responses! Unfortunately neither solution presented worked for me. I am running PSP PhotoX2. I uninstalled the program and re-installed it - problem persists. I then uninstalled it again, ran a PC Tools program I have that removes errant files, etc. and then re-installed PSP. The problem is still there.
So somehow PSP is not uninstalling something that pertains to my problem. Does anyone know how to find any files, etc that remain after PSP is uninstalled? And how to manually delete them?
Many thanks!
Diane

Re: "Crop to Selection" creates new image???
I'm sorry to hear the the fix didn't work for you. Since it's a bug in the program I don't think that reinstalling X2 will fix it. I'm also using X2 and I get the same bug in X2 on my husband's computer. All I have to do to make the bug appear is to use Crop as New Image once or twice. To make it go away, I have to do a regular crop once or twice. Maybe you just need to do a regular crop a few more times. Did you try that? It seems to be random whether it takes once or twice to clear the glitch but it's always once or twice on both my computer and my husband's in X2.

Re: "Crop to Selection" creates new image???
I only have PSP X2 installed on my desktop, running WinXP HP, SP3, and I can not replicate this bug. I've tried every way to Sunday to do so. If I want to crop to new image it does so. I can immediately just crop, and it does that without creating a new image. I've tried to do repeated crop to new image, both with and without the floating crop bar, trying to invoke the bug, and it will not.
Maybe mine is bugging in that it will not produce the bug..

Re: "Crop to Selection" creates new image???
Ron, I think you're misunderstanding what the bug is. The bug is with the Selection tool, not the Crop Tool but the Crop Tool causes the glitch. After using Crop as New Image (using the Crop Tool), try doing a Crop to Selection (Shift + R) after making a selection with the rectangular selection tool. It might take doing it more than once to make the bug appear. When I do that I get the same thing that Didee gets where the image is cropped as a new image. That shouldn't happen with the Selection tool.
In case it makes a difference, I'm using PSP Ultimate Photo X2 version 12.50.

Yep, it's there, just as described. Was also to get rid of it as you stated, by just doing a normal crop.

Re: "Crop to Selection" creates new image???
Thanks to all for your comments. Well, it is fixed now! I uninstalled the program again, then went into "Folder Options" in the Control Panel (I have VISTA) and under the VIEW tab clicked "Show hidden files and folders". Then I went into EXPLORER and searched my hard drive for "Corel" and "PSP". I found a number of them and I deleted them all. (I don't have any other Corel products.) Then with my virus scanner off, I reinstalled PSP. Thankfully the Selection tool works normally.
Thanks again for taking the time to help me!
