Paint Shop Pro Un-supported files
I am having trouble getting psp version 9.01 to support Nikon raw nef files. I have tried
1. File>Preferences>File Format Associations, then selecting the Nikon *nef format.
2. Clicking the Extensions button to open the Extensions dialogue, this then shows tif as the preferred extension that psp will use to save.
3. To add the nef file extension I click the add button then OK.
4. Dialogue box then shows "The extension nef is used by another format: Raw Camera Data (*nef,.......) I click OK then
5. File Format Association shows extensions to be used as tif and tiff, - it doesn't list nef. I then click OK, but I am still unable to open Nikon raw files.
6. This is such a fundamental problem and I have followed the advice in the Help section, what am I doing wrong. Please help.

Re: Paint Shop Pro Un-supported files
I also have a problem trying to open up RAW files. I am using a Nikon D50, which is supported and I have installed all the updates. I am at a loss of what to resolve this issue!

Sarastro,
What model of Nikon? The list that Abiel shows are those supported by PSP X3.
Gerald,
Are you also using PSP 9 or a more current version?

Hi, Abiel Corel NA, Ron P
Thanks for your comments about my query. I am using a Nikon D90, I can open the JPEG files taken at the same time as the nef files on the same camera, but not the nef files.

Re: Paint Shop Pro Un-supported files
Sarastro,
PSP should be able to handle those NEF raw files. I'm at a loss as to why it isn't. If you haven't read all the posts on how messed up PSP X3 is, about how installing SP-3 will break numerous things, then don't be surprised as to why it will not do something it should. FWIW, others that extensively shoot in RAW, say the same about PSP's RAW conversion, it sucks. If Nikon provides you with a utility for this, use it, otherwise you might consider looking for and/or investing in a good one. There's other things with PSP that are good, but RAW photo formats, conversions, has been left outside in the cold arctic.

Re: Paint Shop Pro Un-supported files
Thanks Ron, your comments are most interesting. I have had my version of PSP a long time and have only just been in a positon to start using it. However I am amazed that it should have difficulties with Nikon raw files, since they and Canon are the two foremost manufacturers for enthusiast photographers. I have always understood that PSP had a good name for digital imaging software, nevertheless most comment here in the UK and sources of help, seem to refer to the products of another well known rival manufacturer. I am probably not allowed to mention it by name on this forum. Since it looks as though I am going to have to get a more modern piece of software it is going to make more sense to follow in the footsteps of others.

PSP 9, 2004
Nikon D90, 2008
Nope, not gonna be supported. Even if you were using PSP X3 you may not like the interface, options for converting, or the results.

Re: Paint Shop Pro Un-supported files
For those using PSP 9, you may not have too much luck with either the D50 or the D90.
From the PSP 9.01 release notes:
From the PSP 9.01 release notes:
I don't see either model listed. I'm not sure which (if any) additional models were supported through changes from auto-update.Raw Camera support currently supports the following camera models: Canon 300D Rebel, D30, D60, 10D, 1D, 1Ds, 1D Mark II, Powershot G3, Powershot G5, S-50; Nikon D1, D1h, D100, D2h, D1X, D70; Olympus 5050, 5060, E1, E10, E20; Fuji S2 Pro, S7000; Pentax *ist; Minolta A1, A2; Kodak 760, 14N, 14c. Support for additional camera models will be provided through the auto-update feature as they become available.

@Sarastro
PSPX3's file association is the same what Windows also does: Go to your local folder with NEF files, right-click on a .nef file -> Open with and choose PSPX3. Tick "Always open this kind of file".
After, Windows will use PSPPX3 to open NEF files.

Hi Simone, unfortunately PSPX3 is not shown as an option to open with, since PSP version 9.01 predates PSPX3.

Re: Paint Shop Pro Un-supported files
I have the problem that when I try to "open with" X3, because X3 and X2 have the same program file name, X2 comes up. X2 is mentioned in my open with list.
Can you look which program is mentioned in:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\.nef
?
