Hi

That’s good news,
Can you view the WMV profiles and see if there are some Ulead Neptune options.
Just curious to know if they are still being used by Corel.
I assume you haven’t installed earlier versions than VS 11

Just to say that on my own Win 7 set-up, it shows Neptune plus all the other Windows Media Encoder 9 options... I installed the latter prior to its being replaced by Expressions 4, and in fact have seen no need to update it.

Trevor--

Yes, I do have the Neptune and all of the Windows Media 9 options now under my profiles... However, not exactly sure what the Neptune option is?? As I said I am fairly new to the video editing process, is saving as a .wav my best option considering size and quality for vimeo or other uses such as adding to websites, etc.?? Considering that I am editing and saving upwards of 500 short instructional videos (roughly 30 - 90 seconds in length).... Any suggestions or recommendation would be greatly appreciated..

Thanks

Hi

Thanks you for that information, I was unsure if the Ulead Neptune profiles were installed by X3 or on my system with the install of VS9?

Mrover
WMV profiles are provided / installed on your pc from a variety of sources, the installation of Windows Media player installs most, additional profiles being added with WMV updates, the WMV Encoder adds quite a few more, the software being superseded by windows Expressions.

The installation of Video Studio also adds wmv profiles called Ulead Neptune Best/ good/low medium etc. There are also some Ulead HD profiles.

View Custom-WMV-Profile tab—Customise select the profiles in turn to view the actual properties.
If you wish to create your own or modify a profile, choose copy, giving it a new name then Edit the copy.

Which format to use.

As you are aware you have to weigh-up the quality with the size for viewing. Hopefully most have fast internet and can cope with HD.
If you have a large audience then WMV or Flash may be the best options as everybody will have these players installed on there pc’s.

My first concern was the fact that your original frame sizes use widescreen 16:9 yet you have been using a 4:3 ratio to create the WMV’s

Do you not notice any difference between the originals and the new WMV files?

How large are you intending to view the video, if you are viewing in full screen then you need to be using a higher quality/frame size than if you are viewing as say a 6 inch window.

Do you have any videos already uploaded to vimeo?

Thanks Trevor..... I don't necessarily need the video to be full screen.... The reason I chose .wmv in the first place was because we are going to have many different people needing to access and view these videos on a regular basis and I thought WMV would be the easiest for most people to view.

I have uploaded a few videos to vimeo... One of the videos is at:

http://vimeo.com/27857701

The quality seems to look good to me and for the size of the file, I like the 640x480 WMV.... However, if there is a better way that I could be doing things, I will absolutely take the suggestions!

Thanks

Hi

The only problem is that you are using 16:9 as the original and creating a 4:3 video.
This is adding a black border top and bottom. Its probably using about a third of the frame.

I managed to modify the Ulead Neptune Best quality to use a frame size of 1280 x 720 x 30fps
A one minute video being about 6 Mb, comparable to your sizes.
I tried other options but produced larger file sizes.

As you have many to render you may be best using Make Movie Templates Manager to create a template.
Then you wont have to navigate through the custom option.

Thanks Trevor!! i will definitely try to do this to get the best quality that I can get at a manageable size. As I have never used Videostudio before the last month or so, I obviously have no experience with the Template or how that works... I will look at it and see if I can figure it out. I truly appreciate your help and hope that I can get to the point where I can edit videos to the best quality I can for what I want to do.

Thanks again

So when I try to edit a profile in the Make Movie Template Manager, I get the an "Access Denied" error followed by the following error Box:

Windows Media Encoder
"An error has occurred. If the error continues, consider reloading the session file, starting a new session, or restarting the encoder"

I am trying to edit the Neptune Best Quality to a different size....

The steps I took were opening the Make Movie Template Manager and selecting New
I then named the new template and went to Customize under the Profile tab
In this box I chose Neptune Best Quality and chose Edit
Under the tab that showed the target bit rate I changed the size, when I click OK is when I get the error message that I explained before....

Am I doing any of this correctly or am I way off.... and if I am do you have any idea to why I am getting the above error message? Wondering if the System Restore affected this??

Thanks,

Matt

Hi Matt

Maybe you have to first copy the template
This is what I did……………

Share Create Video File
Custom- Save type as WMV
Options
Profile tab
Customise will open a new window (Manage Profiles.)
Choose the profile-Neptune Best Quality- details will show below.
Copy-name it Neptune_BestQuality 1280 x 720
Press OK
Select the new copy profile Neptune_BestQuality 1280 x 720
Choose Edit I see a tab called 768kbps
Change the video size to 1280 x 720.
Click OK
Notice the details in the lower panel.
Close window
That should have created the profile and show in the list.

Choose the profile Neptune_BestQuality 1280 x 720 to render your video.

Add the template to Make Movie Templates Manager

New
Choose the file format as WMV
Give it a name as Neptune_BestQuality 1280 x 720
Ok opens the Template Options window
Prifile tab
Select your profile Neptune_BestQuality 1280 x 720
Click Ok
Template shows in available movie template list
Job done—Close window.

To use the template go to Share Create Video File your template should show at the bottom of the list immediately above custom.
Before rendering view the properties in the lower panel they should make sense then Save to render.

Good luck

Hey Trevor - Was out of town this weekend and didn't get the opportunity to try to copy the template until this morning.

When I went through the steps that you explained..... After I chose "Copy" and tried to rename to "Neptune Best Quality 1280 x 720".... I received the following error message:

"Profile Manager: The profile could not be saved. Restart the encoder and try again"

Any suggestions on getting passed this error message???

Thanks for ALL of your help.

Hi Matt

There is always something in the way, oh why can’t computers just simply work.

There have been a few posts regarding saving profiles, I recall this, but a search may find more info.

http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=40040

Windows XP seems to work Ok but Vista and I assume W7 have some security issues.
There are a few ideas floating about here.

At the end of this post I tried changing permissions on my wife’s laptop and managed to save the profiles.

for XP The wmv profile folder can be found here… C:\Program Files\Windows Media Components\Encoder\Profiles

I could e-mail a profile I made, but you may still have problems adding it to the folder if it’s a permissions issue?

You need to look on the 2nd page of the thread Trevor linked to. Vista and Win7 thinks they know what's best for you, and that you're to be treated like a 2-yr old. Once you get past the security traps, then you can create any WMV profile you want. While Trevor posted this, I was busy going back through mine, because somehow the profiles security got changed back. It gets to be a real pain, when this happens, especially when you've gone through the motions so you can edit the profiles, to find them reverted.

FWIW, I could not get mine set, until I disable UAC (User Account Control). Go to Control Panel, User Accounts, click on the link to turn on/off UAC, then clear the checkbox.
