...even though a work-around had to be used
Not sure using the Add method is necessarily a work-around, since it has long been available as the second method of creating a template. But you sure are right about Corel's earlier reaction to the whole question of full 1080/50/60p. And things do indeed appear to have changed with SP1 for X4...

But the idea of approaching Jan is worth pursuing. (For other users, Jan is the project manager within Corel for Video Studio...)

Hi Stefan / Ken / Ron

I created the 50 fps video, my timeline scale is Pal 25fps, so when I play back the video it only plays ever other frame, would that be correct?
Now I know it is possible to set the timeline to 50 fps, but unfortunately I am unable to do this, at the moment????
So if video studio is missing every other frame, is that frame a duplicate or a separate frame.

Now I created a Sequence file, this created 720 images, hopefully one for each frame.

Unfortunately I now see every second image as being duplicate, indicates to me that every second frame is duplicate?
Back to the drawing board………….

Update

I have just created a Sequence folder of the Original video file and that also shows duplicate images.
Now either the original has duplicate frames or Video Studio is creating duplicate images?

Thanks, now I finally got it to work ok with 50 fps. The template made all the difference to me.

When I compare the quality from the original files played back directly from the camera (Sony HDR-CX700) to the flatscreen TV via HDMI and the newly produced mpg is that the razor sharp original quality is a little downgraded. The bitrate is about the same on the original video clip and the newly produced mpg, though. I guess some quality loss is expected in the conversion process, or?

I must say that the video quality (with original files) from this consumer camera (when connected directly via HDMI to the TV [Sony KDL-46EX713]) was beyond my expectation. It's really super and not what I expected. You can actually see every little tiny detail. The smoothness when using 50p is astonishing. I guess the circuitry in the TV also help increasing the final result, too.

Is there any way of preserving the original MTS-files' top quality when processed through VSX4? Any way of producing MTS-files (if that would make any difference, qualitywise). As you can see I'm looking for the very best possible video quality.

Now looking forward to the next version of VS with full-hd/50p Blu-ray support!

If you followed my recipe for making the template, then the processed video will have exactly the same properties as the original... The only difference is in the extension -- mpg instead of the original mts. But that does not signify anything. An mts extension simply means that it is high definition mpeg-4 video processed as transport stream (TS). The mpg extension is what VS uses for the same thing. I am unable to account for the difference in quality you are seeing. Notionally, though, any conversion or re-encoding of any type of mpeg video will always entail a small quality loss -- it is simply the nature of the beast since mpeg is a lossy format.

But as I say, the playback on my own HDTV looked pretty good -- and I would think any audience you might have would think the same. Mind you, I agree I did not have your original camera connected, so cannot compare it to playback via that method.

Hi Ken,

Yes, you're right, the processed video is very good, but as you write any conversion will inevitable cause some degree of quality loss.

My impression when using the original MTS files played back from the camcorder directly connected to the TV via HDMI, just bring it all to the next level. The panning (50p) smoothness and crystal sharp images did surprise me alot. You really say WOW, at least I did (did not expect this from a consumer camera). I guess the a combination of the hardware circuitry of the both the camera and TV helps too. The reason I mention the hardware is because if I connect the camera via HDMI to a TV that's only 1-2 years old its hardware does not produce as good video quality as my new TV, so the hardware manufacturers are getting better and better for sure.

By the way, changing the timeline to 50 fps made VSX4 rendering go berserk, so this was not an option in my case. Caused more harm than good. In the end it worked out anyway using the standard 25 fps timeline.

If you're interested I can upload the final edition of the video clips (43 min - 8 GB, [10/10Mbps up/downstream from the server, though]).

Once again, thanks for the help. Now awaiting the next release of VS with true 50p support (Blu-ray etc.)

Hi

Sorry for the delay in replying.

I am still confused with the 50p type rendered video file.
The original sample contains 720 frames, now I would like to view each frame in turn and identify that the next frame is different to the preceding one. That would prove to me that I am viewing a true 50P file.
Well I can do this using Windows Media Classic, seems to be my best option.

When I view in Video Studio I can only view as 25 fps, only viewing every other frame.
(I am unable to change the timeline to 50fps)
When I view using Windows Media Player Classic I can view all 720 frames.
The original shows all frames being different
The rendered frame from the new template is an Mpeg, this shows alternate duplicate frames?
For me this is not true 50P.

Now I am not sure that Video Studio is producing a true 50P type video file. Just maybe its creating a 50i or 25P, I know the properties show as 50 fps.

Stefan, you say that the rendered quality shows a reduction in quality.
I would have thought that if the rendered is the same as original, which it is supposed to be then you would have difficulty in identifying the quality change.
However having duplicate frames would easily show, at least I would have thought you would see a difference.

As I say I am not convinced --- I don’t see full HD?????????????

Hi Trevor,

I finally got VSX4 (SP1) to both show 50 frames/s on the timeline and produce true 50 unique (no duplicates) frames per second. I did exactly as described in http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php ... ps#p215871 , to force VSX4 to show 50 fps in the timeline, but this made VSX4 VERY slow when clicking buttons etc.

I made a template of the first clip in the original (50p mts-file from the Sony HDR-CX700 camera) video as described above by Ken and then it worked fine to produce true 50p output. To verify that it's really 50 unique frames per second, I checked it frame by frame to be sure that each frame is unique and not a duplicate. I used an external software to do this, just to be sure.

To sum it all up, my personal feeling is to wait for true 50p support by the software developer at Corel, as many features (creating Blu-rays etc.) in the program is not too good handling 50p yet. As I wrote, I could see a slight degree of the video quality on the processed final mpeg-file compared to the original one. The original mts-files viewed with the camera connected via HDMI directly to the TV really brings it all to a new level of high definition TV. It's really a wow moment! This is what I'm hoping for in the future, to be able to maintain the original quality when rendering to the final video film.

I have converted the 50p mpg (8GB) to XviD to save some space (2GB limit for http download, using Microsoft Internet Explorer) if you'd like to see. Not the very best quality of course, but viewable.

Hi

Thanks Stefan

I think my problem is not being able to set 50 fps on the timeline.
I have tried and better tried I think it may be an XP issue?
I am able to make the template without problems but the timeline is another issue.

Not really an issue for me as I don’t use HD at the moment, but the program should work with the samples i have. (more now thanks to you).
Its just that if you render like for like then I wouldn’t have expected you to notice a reduction in quality.

Good luck and thanks again for the reply.
