Can't burn 3.7gb video file

Post by boongsong »

I just downloaded/installed Video Studio X4 Pro. Quite impressive. I've been using Roxio but too many problems so wanted to see if Corel is better.
Have a minor problem that I haven't been able to solve. Background:
I have 16 individual videos of foreign "soap operas" (all approx 3.7gb). All videos are either mpeg2 or avi. I copied all of them with no problem. Then, I wanted to eliminate some useless things at the beginning and end of each one. I went into a video editing program and trimmed approx 5 secs from the beginning and end of each video. After the trimming, I saved the videos to my hard drive in the My Videos folder in the Libraries.
Then, because of some difficulties with Roxio, I decided to try Corel.
Here's the problem.
When I import a video, click on Tools, Create Disc, DVD, unmark Menu, then Burn, I always get the error telling me the total size is larger than the chosen project.
This is what I don't understand. If the video, which is approx. 3.7gb,and I'm using a 4.7gb dvd, why am I getting this error?
FYI: I went ahead and clicked on Yes, try to fit to disc, and after approximately 45 mins, it completed, ejected the disc and all I had was approx. 1/8" burn area. The properties of that disc showed it was a video.ts and when I clicked on it, the windows player opened and said can't be rendered.
I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong, but I don't under stand why X$ Pro says a 3.7gb video is over 7gb.
If this post is not in the right forum, I apologize. :?:

Hi

And welcome to the forums.

Yes you have posted to the correct forum and thank you for filling out your PC profile.

To burn a dvd we need a compliant mpeg2 video file.

Can you give more details regarding the video files you are intending to burn to disc.

From the timeline or library, right click the clip and select properties, what are they?
Do this for all types.

Ok start Video Studio the timelines are empty
Share Create disc – DVD will open the burner module.
Top Left-Add Video
View the video properties by clicking the “I” information to the left.

Now if your files are compliant Mpeg2 then they will be burned to disc without re-coding.
If they are other types, say AVI then Video Studio will re-code/ render the files prior to burning.
It will use the properties showing under the “Options Cogwheel”
Change Mpeg settings—customise………..

You can modify these settings to match the video’s duration, by altering the bit rate your video will fit to disc.
The image you provided shows the duration at about 2 hours, you would need a bit rate of approximately 4000kbps to produce a file below 4.3 Gb.

We need to know the properties of your video files to go any further……….

Thank you Trevor for your quick response.
I see one of my problems was I didn't click on the Share button. Rather, I went directly to Create Disc.
At any rate, I'm enclosing screen shots of the clips properties and what the project preferences show.
Your guidance has made it much clearer to me. I had looked for some sort of user manual, but didn't find anything. Probably didn't look hard encough.
From what I saw of the clip, following your suggestions, it appears that burning won't be a problem now. It shows the correct length.
Thanks for your help. I really appreciate it.

Hi

Can you tell us where you live? Are you Pal or Ntsc

The first image shows the properties as using Ntsc, which would indicate that the program has been installed to Ntsc

Your second image shows the video properties as being Pal
-------------------------

Viewing the Video Properties I see that they are XVid, To burn a DVD you need a standard Mpeg2 file, your video will b re-coded, however I cannot say what the final quality will be.

First can we sort the Pal Ntsc issue

As Trevor says the NTSC/PAL issue needs to be resolved first, but doesn't solve the roblem of fitting the movie on the dvd.
Your original file is a highly compressed file xvid mp4.
Going by the length in seconds it's about 2 hours long?
To get this to fit on a dvd as an mpeg2 you will need to use a much lower bitrate than the 8,000 in the template, off the top of my heada bout 5,000.
LPCM audio also takes up quite a bit of space, if you can use ac3 audio this will give quality and take up less room.

Hi

The video shows as 1 hr 59 min 53 sec from the first image in the burner module.
I suggested a bit rate of 4000 kbps.
However there is going to be a lot of changes to convert the file to a compliant Mpeg2, the mix of Pal to Ntsc is not going to help and vidx to mpeg2.

As we know the video is xvid, I know you can save Div X as a data file to disc and play on a DVD Player, would this be the same for xvid. Just another option, assuming the player supports the format.
Otherwise its making a DVD.

Thanks to all. I much appreciate your input and pointing out what the problem(s) is/are. I will double check all of the videos. I assumed that
they all were NTSC as they played on our dvd player. I need to do some more research. If needed, I have a program that will convert from PAL
to NTSC and another to mpeg2.
Then again, I may just "scrap" the whole project.
Again, thanks to all of you for your help. I can honestly say that these forums are so much better than some others I've been in when looking
for solutions to video processing problems. The others always used a "put-down" tone in their responses. Won't go into detail. Just a pleasure'
dealing with people that don't make me feel stupid.
