Scanned photos appear about one quarter size

Post by MikeJD »

HiI have PaintShop Pro X3 and pretty much all the other programs.
I scanned lots of photos (6*4) at a 300 dpi which works out at about 11 meg each photo (i think this was overkill!).
However, when i created a slideshow these photos are shown as about one quarter sized. Is there any way i can correct this ?
Should i for the future scan at a different dpi ? I want to view the images as a slideshow and am not interested in printing them.

Many thanks for your help
Mike

Welcome to the forums, :)

First, DPI is used for print media only. For your purpose of producing slideshows, you need to focus on PPI, pixels per inch. A monitor, or TV screen has no idea what a dot is, or how many of them to display for every inch. So with that, what resolution in pixels are your images? You could have a scanned photo that is a wallet sized, scanned at 300dpi, however it may only display without being pixelated at sizes no larger than 320 x 240px.

In PSPX3, when you open your image, what size does it say the photo is?

Thanks Ron for coming back so soon and for your advice.

On checking the properties, when the file is opened ( and this applies to all the photos i have scanned - from 1977 to 2002) the Image dimesions are 2550 * 3501 pixels
and the pixels per cm are 118 . 110
the size is 215.900 * 296.419 mm

it also days the RGB IS 8 BITS / CHANNEL.

Sorry to sound very basic , but i am extremely new to this ( as is quite apparant !)

If i double click on the file i can get it to appear to fill the screen ( but only by using the mouse to increase the size of the image). But i cant seem to fathom out how to make a sllideshow that shows the whole picture - at the moment it shows massive amounts of white space.)

many thanks again Ron

I forgot to ask what format (jpeg, bmp, png, tif) did you scan the photos to? For a slideshow I would choose jpeg or png. The resolution is more than enough to produce a very good quality slideshow, if not High-def.

Next question what program are you using to create the slideshow? It's not the horrible Photo Project Creator is it? While I do have it, it is only because I have no way to uninstall it separately of PSP X3.

Hi Ron

All of the files have been created in the same PaintShop Pro X3 programme - PSPImage.

And i have been using the Photo Creator that came with the suite of stuff i got from Corel.

Do you think i should be saving in jpeg in the future? And can i easily convert the ones i have scanned in the avove programe?

many thanks

On a side note (question to Ron): which application would you recommend for creating slide shows (since you obviously are not a fan of Paintshop Pro Photo Project Creator)?
Thank you in advance,

If you are using the Project Creator, you may want to select the PROJECT TYPE as HIGH DEFINITION.

If you can convert one of your files to a jpeg, post it online somewhere and show a link too it that would help. You say that you have to use the mouse to make the image full sized when you click on it and it has massive amounts of white space, do you need to crop the outer edge of the file out to get to just the image you want? Just a thought.

I use my video editor, VideoStudio or MediaStudio Pro, or DVD MovieFactory. I also have a couple of other programs that I could create a slideshow, but don't use them that often.

Edited
FWIW, I've been scanning photos using PSP X2. My scanner is part of Lexmark 7350 All-in-One, I've been using 600dpi to scan them in. For 3" x 5" photos, I've been getting a resolution of 3517 x 2362px. The size of the photos are fine in VideoStudio. Abiel may be correct, that you need to check the setting in Project Creator, if your images are appearing real small.

Also you might be aware that using very large images in a program that is designed to create slideshow or video, can cause the program to slow way down. Video, which is what your slideshow will be, uses certain frame sizes. This depends on if you're creating High-Def or Standard-Def. The program will need to resize them, and some video editing programs just don't do a very good job of re-sizing. It's best done in a photo program.
