resizing problems

Post by millersmoments »

I have resized my images to an 8 x 10 format, but when I sent the files to my print lab, they told me they are less than an 8x10, with a resolution less than what I had indicated in prox3... I'm guessing this is something quite simple that I am overlooking, but am at a loss and need to resolve this fairly quickly
Thanks for any input

Can you tell is what you did to supposedly resize them to an 8x10 image? I mean 8x10 is the size in inches but then you have to figure in the resolution of the image. That is how many pixels go into one inch. At that size 250 dpi to 300 dpi is somewhat standard as far as I know and tour print lab might have very specific requirements.

Also could you tell us the size of your image prior to residing? Also can you tell us what size your print lab said the image waa after the reside?

To add to Levi's reply are you sure that the file is going to have a 4:5 ratio? If you're simply resizing a file straight from a digital camera or from a scan other than an 8x10, 16x20, 4x5, etc... then there will be cropping involved. If you've cropped nothing then you may be having a wrong proportions problem rather than a wrong size problem.

Also as a general rule of thumb I don't down size anything for print. If the file is too small that's a different story and you've got to know what you're looking at to decide if it will print OK. But printing services know what they're doing and downsizing by you may or may not even be as good in the quality department than their programs can produce. After all, they do it all day every day. Either that or when people print out their 18mp cameras pictures to 4x6 they all just look horrible, and I don't think that's the case.
