For convenience, I use my video camera for both video and taking still pictures. For video I use use a wide frame 16:9 while capturing stills I use a standard frame 4:3 (the standard frame allows a higher megapixel). I use VS X2 for creating my home DVD's and I use Photostory 3 for my slide shows.
I've never used the still capture function on VS until today. I needed a couple of stills from the video to help with the continuity of my slide show.
I realised that my screen capture would be wide screen but I figured I could edit the photo and crop it to 4:3. What actually happens is that VS X2 captures the image and squeezes it to 4:3 so in the end I get these long images!
I would appreciate any suggestions on how to resolve this issue.

Hi Candive
Yes that may be correct.
From memory……..
You have to switch to Project Playback.
Select the frame you wish to copy
Press the word Project next to the play button
Tools Save current Frame as Image, I think…………

Re: Problem using VS X2 to capture still images
Thank you Trevor,
Your instructions were correct and I was able to capture the video image in its original wide screen format. Thank you again for your quick response to my query.
Athough this work around solved the problem it is a bit conuter intuitive and I was just wondering if anyone knew why the "capture still" button doesn't do the same thing? It would be so much easier. Does this mean that if I want to use the button, I have to shoot my video in 4:3 format? While this would have been acceptable a few years back before wide screen TV's, nowadays I would suspect most people shoot their home video wide screen.
Also, I was wondering if this is an issue with the current version of Videostudio X4 or has it been fixed?

Re: Problem using VS X2 to capture still images
Hi Candive
The use of the tools- Save Current frame is not a so much work-round but should be used as a normal. Process.
When we use standard definition 4:3 video the frame size will be 720 x 576, generally we think these figures are 4:3, however using a calculator will reveal that 768 x 576 is actually 4:3.
When we use widescreen 16 : 9 the frame size is the same using 720 x 576, however the pixels making up the frame are not square but rectangular, they are stretched to 16:9 shape using a process called “Non Square Pixel Rendering”
I know we generally relate to pixels as being square………..
Ok that’s the technical stuff out of the way.
Capturing a still image
We have two options using the menu
1 / “Clip-Save as still image” only available in clip playback mode, will create an image using the clips frame size and clip details only. Right click your clip and select properties. Notice the frame size.
Now from the library right click the new image to view properties.
The option to save the image is also available from the panel to the right of the preview screen “Save as Still Image”
2/ “Tools – Save current frame as image” available in Project Playback mode, will save the image as seen on screen, including any text, transitions, as I say -- as seen on screen.
The frame size for a widescreen image will be 1024 x 576, again right click the clip in the library, select properties.
Clear as mud
Candice continue to use widescreen 16:9 for your videos
