Share – produce mp4 in 16:9

Post by Peem »

I’ve just produced a short video, intended for Youtube, but in the ‘Share – create video file’ step can find no options to produce an mp4 file in 16:9. My preferences were set to 16:9 right from the start and all the material is either originally 16:9 or cropped to 16:9, so it would be nice to produce the video as 16:9. I tried a few other file type options that I thought might be suitable for uploading but can’t find anything on offer that would produce a small file size in 16:9. Am I doing something wrong or just being unobservant?

Thanks Ron,
I did search before posting, without any useful results.

The 720 HD Trevor refers to seems extravagant when my clips are only 720 pix across and I am trying to make a small file to upload, to combat pathetic internet. It sees strange that VS offers both 16:9 and 4:3 for the DVD option that produces mpeg files but not if you are trying for smaller file sizes. But I will have a play along the lines he suggests.

Hi Peter

What actual size are you aiming for, are you wanting HD.

By reducing the bit rate you will reduce the Mb size, but this will impact on quality.

Try a frame size of 1024 x 576 to maintain the 16:9 ratio, but may look a bit poor on full screen.
Half that 512 x 288 will reduce the MB even further.

If you provide the details of your original files properties I may be able to suggest other options.

Hi Peter

Done a quick test
Try Flash, its probably the smallest of formats

FLASH Files
24 bits, 512 x 288, 25 fps (assuming the original uses 25fps)
Frame-based
22.050 KHz, 16 bits, Stereo

Use make Movie Templates Manager to create a template, you set the frame size using the User Defined option.
The template will show from Share Create Video File, then choose Options and deselect Non Square Pixel Rendering, then save to render.

A 1 minute video rendered to 2.7 Mb

By the way first render the project to a single video file, same as original, then convert the single file.

Trevor,
My clips are 720x576 i think [a bit hazy on the 2nd number and other computer not running] but they give a 16:9 SD picture, so must be non square pixels.

I will go with your flash suggestion - 2.7 Mb is definitely small enough. I was just surprised 16:9 was not offered in formats likely to give small files for SD. I guess everything is aimed to HD now.

Your correct, both 720 x 480 and 720 x 576 are not true 16:9 nor 4:3. The wide-screen is achieved using the non-square pixel. It's not only HD being pushed but 3D as well. I'm still in the SD world, no HD TV yet. My old CRT refuses to quit, so I can't really justify buying another one.

Hi

Flash video does not use Non Square Pixel Rendering hence my suggestion to turn it off.
Try it with and without to see the difference.
Normally the 720 x 576 video is stretched to 16:9.to form widescreen
If you render from the project you will get all sorts of sizes with text/titles being out of place, again why I suggested rendering the project to a single file first.

HD tends to use a frame size at 16:9 ratio, 1280 x 720 or 1920 x 1080 are 16:9 ratio so don’t need Non Square Pixel Rendering.

Trevor & Ron,

Now that I think about it, this is probably the first time I have wanted to upload 16:9 although I changed to it a while ago. Earlier uploads would have been 4:3.

Trevor,
I have already produced a mpeg file through the DVD step so I will use that but, except for the reason you suggest, including 2 renders in the process would not seem the preferred route.

Thanks, Peter

Just to wind up this post...

I managed to upload 2 flv files. The difference in size between 720x405 and 512x288px might be of interest - 16.9 & 15.6MB for one file and 28.1 & 28.0 for the other.

Thanks Ron & Trevor.
