Video Studio X4 menu interface unresponsive

Post by MikeA »

Anyone having troubles with the Videostudio program menu (not video menus) becoming unresponsive? At times, when I click on on a menu item (e.g., Edit) it changes intensity but doesn't drop down. It knows I am clicking on it by the change in intensity, but nothing happens. It's true for all menu items. To get any to function I have to do something elsewhere, like slightly resize one of the windows (although it's not just a case of clicking anywhere - only some actions reset the menu). Then all is well for a while. Just one of those irritating things.

Hi Mike,

So far I've not experienced this sort of behavior. Some of the differences between our systems and work, mine is the following;
  • Low end dual core intel 1.73ghz
  • Windows Vista OS
  • 32-bit not 64 bit. I highlight that because even though Corel's programs are slated to run on 64-bit systems, they are not true 64-bit.
  • Don't attempt to edit highly compressed formats such as AVCHD or even HDV for that matter
  • Don't try to multi-task while editing, allowing VS to access as much computer resources as possible
  • Don't use Smart Proxy
  • Do not use Automatic Save interval
  • Do not use Cache Photos in Memory
  • Re-sampling Quality set to Better
  • Clip display mode set to Thumbnail and File name
It appears that temporary hangups are due to the computer trying to do other things, thereby robbing resources from VS. You would think running a powerful i7, would not be affected though.

How large of a project are you doing? Very large projects with lots of photos and video clips, transitions, auto music, etc can be very cpu and memory intensive. The auto music tends to slow things down a lot... Al

Good try but no banana, I think.

I really don't think either the movie is too complex/big or anything else is slowing down the system. To test, next time it happens, I will wait a while and come back and see if the issue is resolved. Basically, I built a new computer with a very fast CPU. lots of memory, an SSD for video, and the thing astonished me. I can edit HD without proxy files! No problem. And it's not that the whole interface is unresponsive when it happens. I can change the library to FX etc, resize a window - except get the menu to drop down. This suggests the system is not waiting for a process to complete. I did find an earlier problem with the window interface, in which an error message popped up behind the three major windows. I could see it, but I couldn't reach it because the other three windows were frozen and couldn't be moved or resized, most likely because the inner window was waiting for me to respond with a click on a yes/no icon I couldn't see!

I'll get back on this one, then.

DirectX also affects that graphics of the program. Better check if you have an updated directx.

I have DirectS 11, which I believe is the latest for Windows 7.

Of course you have DirectX 11 as Windows 7 will only run with that. But you may not have the latest build of it. In fact, if you have not updated and have had your computer for more than six months, it is highly unlikely that it has ever been updated from its original build.

DirectX must be updated manually, it is not part of the customary windows update process. There is sticky at the top of the forum, that contains a link to the most recent version. Download it, then create a folder on your system to extract the files into, because it will extract around 200 files, and I sure wouldn't want them running loose. Once extracted, locate inside the folder the DXSETUP.exe file and run it. Once it has finished installing you can delete the folder containing all the extracted files.
