Video Compression

Post by EliTung »

Hi,
I just started using the trial version of the VideoStudio Pro software today. I am trying to modify a .avi video file. The movie "clips" play fine, but whenever I play the project, there seems to be compression of the video or something- it the video just becomes unclear and fuzzy. It is not sharp. I'm not sure if it's because it's too big or if I have the wrong settings. The video is a demo of an Excel macro that I programmed. Thanks

PS.
Does anyone have any advice about how to superimpose animated clips/gifs/images onto a video?

Hi Eli, and welcome to the forums!

Unfortunately, we will need more information. There are over 800 different video formats which use the .avi extension. In other words, apart from uncompressed raw .avi, that extension is just a wrapper for many different types of video. So we need to know which format you are actually using. Please right click one of your video clips, either in the Video Studio timeline or in the library windows, and copy ALL its Properties here.

It says:

File
File format: Microsoft AVI files -- Open DML
Frame rate, 10,000 frames/sec
Duration: 219,400 seconds
Data rate: 2567.18 kbps

Video
Compression: MIcrosoft Video 1
Attributes: 16 bits, 1436x708
Total frames: 2,194 frame(s)

Audio
Compression: PCM
Attributes: 22.050 kHz 16 bit, Stereo
Total Samples : 11,206,656 samples

I think there might be too much information in each frame/snapshot. When I play the Project, the screen becomes unclear and fuzzy, but everytime I press pause, it clears up and the image sharpens again. When I try to "Share" the project as mpeg file, it is still unclear and fuzzy. Thanks

10,000 frames a second!!!!!!!
PAL TV is 25fps, NTSC is 29.97fps
That is an amazing amount of info to be processing.

What is weird is it says 10,000 fps, that you have 219,400 seconds, that's 60 hours if my quick mental maths is right.
Then it says you have only got 2,194 frames, which instead of 60 hours is only a quarter of a second at 10,000fps.

Something is not quite right with the info.

What made the avi file? A screen captrue programme I guess like fraps? Use that app to tell you the properties of the file.

If it's from a screen-capture program, I'd guess the frame rate is 10fps, not 10,000. If so, to make the video smoother, and clearer, try bumping up the frame rate to either 25 or 30fps.

You may also want to complete the system information on your profile. Incase the problem is with the codecs. You may want to update or download these codecs (list below) and check your smartproxy settings.

Here are the codecs.
RealPlayer: http://www.real.com/
DivX: http://www.divx.com/en/software/divx-plus/codec-pack
XviD: http://downloads.xvid.org/downloads/xvidcore-1.3.1.zip
Windows Media Player: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/wind ... dia-player or just download the Windows Encoder at http://www.microsoft.com/expression/pro ... rview.aspx

I think it is 10frames per second. I'm using HyperCam2 for video screen capture. Are you sure bumping up is the solution to the problem? It seems that the videostudio is trying to process too much information at the rate its playing... whenever I pause the project video in the videostudio editor, the screen sharpens/clears, but when I press play, then the project video becomes fuzzy and unclear again.

Sorry, to clarify things, the original video itself is clear/sharp, but only when I try editing it in videostudio pro as part of a project video does it become fuzzy/unclear when I play it.

Previewing your work in VS most of the time will be of a lesser quality than the finally output product. It is there to give you a rough idea on what edits you've done will look like. Again quality is not one of them. You're also dealing with high-definition resolutions, unless you're running a powerful computer, or using Smart Proxy, the preview will be degraded from that of the originals.

In Preferences settings (Settings>Preferences or just press F6 on your keyboard), on the Edit tab, what do you have set for the Re-sampling Quality?
