Is there a limit to Library Folders in VSP X3

Post by ronab »

I am using VideoStudioPro X3 and I am having a problem with my Library folders and I am thinking the problem is a limit in the number of video library folders I can have. Here's what's going on.

1. I create a new library folder. Lets call it Test1
2. I copy my raw video from my camcorder to Test1.
3. When I pull down the list of Folders I see Test1.
4. When I select Test1, it brings me to the Images folder not the folder Test1.

I was thinking about upgrading to X4, if there is no limit on the number of folders I can have. If that is indeed the problem I am facing.

I really like using the folders in the Library Manager as it helps to keep my videos organized instead of just dumping all of them in the Video Folder. :P

Thanks in advance for your response.

Welcome to the forums, :)

With versions prior to X4, they use a separate Library for each category. You would need to create a Test1 folder under Video, Image, Audio and Title. However in VS X4 all your related media, video, photos, and audio are included under the same category folder. There's also buttons/icons that allow you to hide them. So if you're looking for some photos to use in your production, and you have numerous video and audio clips in the same folder, you can hide the video and audio making it easier to locate the photos you want to use.

It also gives you the ability to view your media in the library as thumbnail or list with some details. I think it would be worth your time to at least download the trial version of VS X4.

Thank you Ron.
But, the question remains, is there a limit to the number of folders.
And why in X3 when I select my Test1 folder in the Videos category, I get the generic Images folder.

I do like the way you described the folder structure in X4, it makes sense to me, but the question remains, do you know if is there a limit to the number of folders you can have in the application?

Thanks
Rona

PS I assume I can import my Library to X4?

Hi Rona

Not sure of the actual limit to library pages but yes I think there is a limit, from memory from other posts 99 being mentioned, but cannot confirm.

However I do not use many separate library pages and have never hit a limit
I use the library for my on going projects, generally with limited clips.
Although some users do use it to store all their clips.

You can however Export your library which seems to be a useful option, Settings Library Manager-Export library.
Reset library sets the library to its default state, and of course the import option.

I do not know why you are opening the image library when selecting Video-Test1.
Seems a little strange to me.
I would suggest resetting the library and building the pages again. Then see if they open ok.

In addition……..There is a Windows Media library option, as far as I know this will automatically import all clips from your PC, I advise that you don’t use this option.

No you cannot export the X3 library to X4, i think because of the different library structure.

Sorry I didn't answer the folder quantity question.. However I don't know what the answer to that is. I've never tried to overload it. It's always made sense to me to just have a few, since I'll only work on a few projects at a time.

Why did VS X3 present you with the Generic Images folder is one of the many great mysteries as to why VS X3 does or doesn't do things. I pulled up my VS X3 on my desktop (WinXP) and added several folders, imported photos in to each of them. Every time I select a specific folder it presents me with the correct one. This could be a corrupt database (*dat) file causing this. It would require re-installing to correct it.

No, sadly since there is a major change in the Library structure, you can not use the Library Export/Import to move them from VS X3 to X4. There is a workaround for this.
  1. Load all your photos from a Library into the timeline in VS X3.
  2. Save the project, maybe with the name used for the Library folder
  3. Do this for all Libraries you wish to move
  4. Now open VS X4, open one of the projects from VS X3.
  5. Create a Category Folder (Library), you will not need to create separate folders for your video, photos and audio. For example if your project is about a vacation you took, create one folder with an appropriate name.
  6. Now drag all the clips (photo, video or audio) from the timeline to the newly created Folder.
  7. VS X4 still uses a separate Library for Titles. If you have customized titles you've created you will need to go to the Titles Library in VS X4 and create folders there. I don't know why they kept this separate. In VS X4 you're able to drop a text/title onto any video track.
  8. Repeat as necessary until you have migrated all.
That's a workaround, that one of the members found since the Export/Import does not really allow migrating between versions. Part of the reason could be that all libraries including the filters, transitions, effects are included with this. Those also change from version to version, and causes the conflict. I think that Corel should make it so we can export/import specific libraries, AND make it so it can be used to migrate from one version to the next.

Thanks Ron and Trevor.
I will try the reset of the library folders.

That is a long work around especially considering I have a lot of folders.
But, if X4 is worth it, I might do it.
Thanks again,
Rona

You can download the trial of VS X4 at www.corel.com/trials.

Just incase, if at the back of your head you are asking... here are some steps to import libraries from VideoStudio Pro X3 to VideoStudio Pro X4.
