Color Issue - Images too blue

Post by Dave4m »

I have a problem with the display of images that come out too blue. The thumbnail looks correct but the large preview image has too much blue. I have processed the same raw images in other software with no issues but this seems to be an issue with Paint Shop Pro. Is there a setting that needs to be changed?

Once I open the image the image in the raw converter it shows the color balance "As Shot" as a different value that what the Adobe software reads. Not sure why. You can try and adjust the blueness out of the image but why do I need to do this all the time when I don't have to in other programs.

If I open any image in the full editor the thumbnail takes on this too blue look as well, even if no color adjustments were made.

I have attached 2 screen shots that show the problem.
Any suggestions?

Because PSP's RAW converter sucks!!! If you want a more technical explanation I'm sure someone around here knows.

Dave4m,

Now that's coming from a guy who really, really likes PSP. That should give you a good indication of the RAW converter in PSP.. ;)

While I whole heartedly agree with Levi I'm going to point out that your examples are a Jpeg and a PNG. So I'm assuming that neither example is an actual RAW file.

With snow you'll need to overexpose by a stop in camera otherwise your camera will try to turn the white gray and the blue reflected from the sky will show up more since color saturates more when you underexpose. This is just a side note since I don't see much gross underexposure in your shots and in fact looks a little blown out on the highli9ghts in the first shot.

Actually the raw files from my Pentax camera are saved as DNG not PNG. Hard to read in the reduced image size allowed.

The images as they appear on the PSP large preview pane "appear" as if they are blown out, but if you looked at the file enlarged there is detail in the highlights. I have many other examples where exposure is not in question where you get a different color in the photo when you open files in PSP as compared to other programs.

I was hoping to find out why other than the program sucks. How do others handle this? Do you have to adjust color a lot?

I must as you, what is the model of your Pentax camera?

If you are using Pentax K-x, then you need to update to Service pack 3 and if Pentax K-r, K-5, 645D you need to download the Service Pack 4.

You can download all the updates here http://www.corel.com/servlet/Satellite/ ... 9872271743

Sorry, I shoot Canon so can't comment on the Pentax thing. Canon cameras come with a pretty capable RAW converting program. Obviously it won't work with a Pentax file. Does Pentax have any software that comes with the camera? If so you may use it. The biggest drawback with RAW files is that each camera model will have it's own parameters. So even though my 40D and 400D Canon cameras are both 10.1mp Digic-II cameras with the same sensor and processor the files are different. Consider that Canon alone has some 25 or 30 cameras to reverse engineer, then consider that every camera brand that makes a RAW file needs to be reverse engineered and you start to see the scope of why it's such a bane. PSP is great at a lot of things, but it just doesn't have the market share that the competition has to justify reverse engineering everything, especially considering some of the programs provided by the manufacturer will likely beat it in quality.

For this I don't look down on Corel for one bit. They've got other issues to fix. Besides the competition has a free converter (which you may be using, I don't know). There are also other free RAW converters/editors.

Thanks for your comments. My camera is a K5 and I did try and run the update but apparently it had already been updated to the latest service pack. The camera came with a raw converter and can use that, however I think my issue is not totally related with the conversion of raw files. In the organizer you can look at a jpeg file that has been previously processed in a different program. The thumbnail looks ok, but the large preview looks different. It appears more pronounced in pictures where there is already a lot of blue and the large preview window the blue looks more intense.

I am going to test shooting some shots in the Pentax raw format instead of the Adobe DNG format to see if there is any difference. Not all pictures have this color issue so I will continue to try and figure out why or how to deal with it so I can predict how to deal with this ongoing.

I was getting a color balance reading in PSP raw converter that was different from the Adobe camera raw converter. Both were set to color balance "As Shot" but were telling me different numeric readings. I may test specifying in camera a color balance and then compare to the readings from the raw converters.
