Welcome to the forums,
The main video track will automatically slide to the left so there will not be any gaps. So you need to place something, video clip, image, or color block to hold that space. The most common is the color block. Just drag and drop one from the Color library. You then adjust the duration by grabbing the yellow handle on the right side, and dragging it out to the duration you need.

1. But if you are talking about simply adding something before the first video or image in the main timeline, then simply drag and drop the new video's icon from the library if it is there to the extreme right of the first video clip in the timeline. The existing video will move right to accommodate the new video.
2. Or if it is not yet in the library, then insert an icon using the normal right click > Insert Media Files and navigate to the clip you want to add. When the icon appears in the library windows, proceed as per above.
3. Or if you want to move a video clip which is already in the timeline further up to the beginning, then simply left click that clip in the timeline, hold the left mouse button down and drag and drop it to the extreme left of the timeline at the start of the existing first video.
4. Instead of 2 above, you can also right click in a blank spot to the right of the existing videos in the timeline and choose Insert Video. Navigate to the video you want to insert. It will then appear as the last video in the timeline. Then you use 3 above to drag it to the start of the timeline.

One more option if you're interested in re-arranging clips that are already in the timeline. Go to Storyboard view, where it is much easier move clips around. If you have one in the wrong place, just drag it to where you want it to be, the other clips will move to make room for it.

I usually do that Ron mention.. switched to Storyboard view then just go back to TIMELINE view when I'm done inserting the video or photos that I want to insert in between clips.
