I purchased a downloadable copy of Visual Studio 11 back in 2008, and used it successfully for a while. I also burned it to a CD, along with the license key, for long term storage in case something went wrong.
Since then, I've retired that computer. Now when I went to reinstall from my CD, onto a little Win7 netbook (my only Windows computer at the moment), I find it won't accept the license key (or "serial number" as it calls it on the installation dialog). Even though the license key I'm typing precisely matches the one I saved, as well as the one still available for my inspection online at ulead.com, the installation dialog says "Invalid serial number. Please try again."
The serial number I am typing is of the form 999x9-9x999-99999999. Why should this serial number suddenly fail to work when it worked well before? It's the exact same installation program I ran the first time around. The only thing different is the particular hardware it is being installed on!

Re: Cannot reinstall; serial number not accepted
I really don't know why the serial number is not working. However, I do have two comments. VS 11 was written well before Windows 7 appeared, and is not compatible with it. Even VS 12 when it first appeared was not compatible, though Corel issued a patch for that. But none was ever issued for VS 11.
And second: I am surprised you could even install any version of VS on a netbook. Netbook architecture is just not suited to video editing, and most of their screen resolutions are below the required size to run VS properly.

Right. I did eventually discover the problem with the serial number: there was an invisible character at the end of the line in my key.txt file for some reason, and when I copied-and-pasted the line from that file I inadvertently picked up the invisible character as well. Deleting the character allowed me to proceed with the installation.
At which point, I discovered the next problem, which is that the application refuses to run on less than 1024x768, as you predict. I was eventually able to run it on an old Windows XP machine I found, but then discovered that it didn't provide the feature I was hoping for (zooming and cropping of the video stream) anyway. Phooey. Still, it did successfully convert an uncompressed AVI into an uncompressed QuickTime file, which allowed me to load the video stream into my Mac tool and do the zooming and cropping, so I eventually reached a happy ending of sorts.
Thanks for your time!
